The car won't start. when the dashboard display not work, I will put it into accessory mode and try a couple times suggested on few Youtube videos to make it work. This solved the issue temporarily.

Then find this morning, the car won't come out of accessory mode now. It will not start, when I try to put it into gear, it will go into neutral. Tried several things to start it with no results.

Frustrated, called AAA for a jump start (as suggested by somebody), thinking the 12 volt battery might be dying, no results.

Do not know what to do next? I live in NJ area and looking for a skilled auto shop where I can take this car for repair (actually towed). Dealer around here are rip-offs. Difficult to trust the dealers.

Around Oct. 9 of 2020, my 2007 Prius would not start. I had it towed to the Toyota Dealership in Folsom, CA, the same dealer I have taken this car to for the past 9 years. I was told I needed to replace the auxiliary battery, which I did for about $350.00. The car is not driven much due to COVID and it has approximately 178,000 or 179,000 miles on it currently. Fast forward about two weeks, on Saturday, Oct 24, 2020, the dash display went completely black nothing was displaying, I had no backup camera; almost killed my cat: my speed, fuel, odometer indications did not work; no air conditioner, and the car would not turn off or lock (just like previously noted in similar cases in years past and noted). Folsom Toyota never, ever mentioned the dashboard problem, ever!

I called Toyota who told me they would not cover any cost and that they informed me on Dec. 7 of 2012 via mail (never received) of them offering a Warranty Enhancement Program to extend the warranty coverage for the Instrument Panel Combination Meter (Combination Meter) on 2004 to certain 2009 Model Year Prius Vehicle. They said it was only for those who had previous Combination Meter problems and it is not a recall so they are not entitled to pay now since this offer has past.

I also feel I was falsely lead and told my battery was bad but this is the real problem and the fix is around $750.00 Toyota nor the service department (Folsom Lake Toyota, in Folsom CA). My car currently sits there, hostage as they cannot figure out the odometer reading since the panel display isn't operable. They called to ask me what they thought my mileage was?? Don't you think Toyota should need to repair that as you cannot forge mileage. Then they tried to sell me a Rav4 and said do I really want to deal with all these issues with the these older models. They even had a sales guy call me...hmmmmm... can we say fraud?!

These big corporations never taken ownership or responsibility for their wrongdoing. Not only could this have killed the cat, but even worse a human. How fast was I really going before I noticed no speed indications??

Shame on you Toyota, you say your cars last and last, but it comes with a hefty price! This should be a safety recall and you don't have the guts to stand by your word of your cars lasting and that safety is a top concern for you... all lies, no more Toyota for me!!

Faulty combination meter does not allow me to see how fast I'm going, the gas level, backup camera, etc. Problem has been intermittent for years. I thought I kept hitting the dimmer button behind the steering wheel by mistake. My vehicle has just 35,000 miles on it. Toyota does not care that I am driving a dangerous vehicle. Headquarters will not fix the problem and expects a 74-year-old on a fixed income to come up with $1000 for the repair.

After repeated calls to Toyota and six weeks, Toyota admits it sent the extended warranty notice to the wrong address! Still, Toyota will not do the right thing and cover the expensive replacement of the combination meter. Defective part in a gently driven vehicle serviced on schedule: I did my part but Toyota doesn't care to stand behind the Prius--shameful.

I could only guess when the problem started, but I do know, it happens alot and has been going on for over a year. The instrument panel, that shows how fast I'm going, what gear I'm in, how much gas I have, etc goes black. Its never happened while I'm driving. It only happens when I go to start the car. The only quick fix, is to go to the trunk area of the car, open the panel where the battery is and there's a white handle type thing, that I have to pull to disconnect it from the battery, essentially, it's like disconnecting the negative and positive poles...killing the battery. I wait about 10 minutes, reconnect the handle and the panel comes back on.

I've replaced the battery and that hasn't helped. It does it no matter the weather, cold or hot. I've had the meter put on my car to get a code, but nothing shows up. I've read, that its a combination meter that needs to be replaced and since its out of warranty and there's no recall, on a fixed income, I'm stuck. Grrrrr Toyota needs to recall this! And if it already has, I've lived at the same address the entire time of owning the car and I've never received one

Starting May 2015 whole dashboard in my car sporadically goes black, I can't see how fast i was going or how much gas i have left or use my backup camera in my car. For about an hour i couldn't even get my car to turn off. This has been happening every so often since May of 2015 and is very dangerous driving my car in that condition. The other day my car ran out of gas on the bridge from the 5 freeway to the 91 freeway and I was stranded on the side of the bridge with cars passing at high velocity because i wasn't able to see my gas meter. Toyota has known about this defect as shown below and issued a warranty extension for all models 2004-2009 and my car falls 2 months outside of the warranty program and they refuse to take responsibility. This is very careless and dangerous behavior.

My 2007 Toyota Prius with 50,000 miles will not turn on. It will drive, but the dashboard display will not turn on. It just stays black. Therefore, I have no way of knowing how fast I am driving or how much gas I have in my tank, etc. If I drive it in that state, then the whole car will not turn off once I park. I have to leave it in park with the brake emergency brake on and keys in the ignition. It was sporadic, but now is happening much more frequently. It is a pain and unsafe for the reasons mentioned above.
