This type of complaint is annoying because they always happen when my wife has the car alone and is usually about 500 or more mile from home. She will call me at home repeatedly because it frightens her. There is nothing in the manual to help.
My solution, and it worked most of the time with our 2004, is to tell her to take the next off-ramp and find a place to stop. Then, I have her turn off everything and wait a short time. After the wait, I ask her to restart the car. If the car seems to function normally, I tell her to continue to which ever point she might be headed. If it doesn't work, I tell her to get to the nearest Toyota dealer.
