Our 2012 Prius has been making noises from the engine compartment for several years. This is the first hybrid car we have owned, so we assumed that the sounds were normal, as no warning lights have ever come on to alert us to have anything repaired. On December 19, 2022, I went to start the car and the battery was dead. After replacing the battery, we talked to a independent mechanic and he said the brake booster/actuator was failing. I called a local Toyota dealer and he said to call Toyota Corp. to get the approval for the repair. Toyota Corp said to get the problem diagnosed by the dealer.
We took the car to the Toyota dealer, and the service manager said he could hear the problem as my wife was driving the car into the service line. The problem was diagnosed as a brake actuator needing replacement. The Toyota dealer said it was a very dangerous problem, and recommended that we not drive the car any further. It must also be noted that there have never been any indications from the cars warning system to alert us to go to the dealership. After calling Toyota corp., we were denied a warranty replacement due to the secondary "Voluntary Customer Support Program" expired. We would have brought the car to the dealership if we were notified by the cars warning system, but no lights came on to alert us. The dealer estimated the repair at $3371.84.

I am having unusual issues with the brakes. Upon further research it appears there is a Toyota Customer Support Program, which matches my car year and model as well as the issue I am having and the code that is showing up. However, I was shocked to find that the program is not associated with my VIN. I expect it to cost more than $3000 to fix the issue and it appears I am not alone. I’m seeing many posts online of people having the same issue and apparently the NHTSA is investigating issuing a recall. I have filed a report with the NHTSA as well.
* 2012 Prius * 110,000 miles on it * Brake light, ABS, and stability control lights come on and brakes require more pressure to work * Problem is intermittent, but frequent * Diagnostic code C1391 Abnormal Leak in Accumulator * Exactly matches the description of Customer Support Program ZJB Phase 2 * The brake pads and rotors were inspected within the last month and are good

Prius Brake Problems. From time to time, and becoming more often than not, the brake system keeps failing. Friday, May 12, 2017 we traveled from Seattle to Puyallup on Hwy. 167. Along the way, in rush hour traffic that was stop and go, the brake system failed about five times.

Continuous brake failures when hitting bumps in road while braking. i have had so many near misses and Toyota keeps claiming there is nothing wrong ! One day in 2015 in the rain, I was rolling UPHILL at 21mph - (speed was confirmed by black box recorder) hit a bump at the bottom of the hill on the way up and the car carried on for over 40ft into a stationary vehicle on a flyover. I had to claim on my insurance and was treated like I was at fault! Toyota it's about time you owned up to this intermittent fault please or someone will get killed, if they haven't already ! Please does anyone have the insurance statistics for Front End accidents and the Prius ?

Bought the car new and noticed the brake failure each time you hit a bump in the road or wet surface. Reported each time it went in for service every 5 months and dealer service department states they don't know why. This is going to cause deaths if someone doesn't fix the problem.

After receiving assurances from the Service Manager at Route 44 Toyota, Mark Viera, that my vehicle was in good working order, I returned the keys to the loaner and attempted to retrieve my vehicle.
My car had been backed into a parking space and attempted to leave.
When I depressed the brake pedal at the Stop Sign to exit the dealership, the pedal traveled to the floor and the dashboard warming light came on. I coasted to a stop - there were NO BRAKES!
A Route 44 Toyota technician sat in the passenger seat and I repeatedly demonstrated the brake pedal traveling to the floor and the dashboard warming light coming on.
The Service Manager, Mark Viera assured me 'No Computer Error Messages,' 'Electronic Brakes Feel Different' and no repair was made.
No computer printout was provided.
How can I drive a vehicle with NO BRAKES????

I’m driving with my young children in car seats in the back and all of a sudden the brakes don’t work right and I’m pressing as hard as I can and barely slowing down! I luckily didn’t get into an accident and was quoted 3,700 to fix the problem.
