Prius c

  • Automatic transmission
  • 98,000 miles

Both of my headlights on my 2013 Prius C stopped working at the same time causing a safety issue for driving home at night. Pulled off the road and figured out that the high beams still work, but the regular headlights would not. Seems like there has been a longstanding issue with other models of Prius getting too much energy to the headlights and burning out bulbs - see the Toyota Safety Bulletin T-SB-0204-12 called Headlamp Durability Enhancement. Toyota apparently will only remedy this for a Prius still under the 36,000 mile warranty. Other than that, they will be happy to have you pay them to fix their design flaw. Again, we are still in the fact finding process, so I'm not sure if this will be our final solution. Fuses are in tact. Will remove the bulbs now to see if they are both burned out. Annoying. Well documented issue for many Prius owners. Dangerous to lose both headlights when driving at night.

Prius c

  • Automatic transmission
  • 56,000 miles

My lights went out on Thursday night - both at the same time. Took it in to get fixed on my day off - Tuesday and they said the lights just both burnt out - found that weird that both would burn out at the same time on the same night. Working at 6pm, both not working at 8pm. Told them it seemed weird and I thought it was more like a short - but they insisted that is what the problem was so replaced the bulbs. It worked on Tuesday night, Wed morning and when I was driving home Wed night - they got dim and then stopped working. I drove to the dealer right away - they worked for the dealer. He drove the car for 15 miles or so and worked. I left frustrated and they worked all the way home. Drove into work today and they went out part way to work, but worked at lunch. To me this seems like a short. I have read how the Prius in the past has had issues with this. I am not a new driver and I don't fiddle with my lights - I am not making up the light issue. I have to use my brights when this happens and when I use my brights - I have to keep the lever pulled for it to work. If I put into the brights position for them to stay on - they don't stay on. The worker at the service center thinks I'm just a crazy lady. Very frustrating!! And very unsafe. I drive to work 40 miles one way and both directions are in the dark. If this is a known issue for the 2013 Prius, please let me know.
