Yet another Blizzard Pearl Rav4 with paint peeling issues. If this is an original factory primer problem as many believe, why is it only this color. Is a different primer used for white? In order to repair, the local body shop which does much of Toyota's work, all paint and primer must be removed from the roof at a cost of about $1,800. Toyota Canada accepts no responsibility in this matter and by doing so has lost me as a returning customer.

My 2009 Toyota Rav4 started losing paint in large patches this winter. This continues to peel every day. I contacted Toyota about this and their response was to tell me all about their continuous improvement process. Not much good to me at this point.
I don't think repainting will resolve this as the original paint does not appear to have adhered well to the primer and it may continue to separate from the primer losing both original and new paint. Temped to simply artfully hand paint "Toyota Quality" on the bare patches and make to car a statement piece.
This is my forth Toyota and I was a very loyal Toyota customer that promoted their vehicles to others (before this experience). I have had great luck with them before this. My 2000 Rav4 was reliable for 15 years and 425,000 kilometers. I can't be the only one experiencing this issue.

Like the other complaints I have seen on paint pealing on the 2009 Rav4 Blizzard Pearl White paint mime has also continued to peal over time. It started on the roof between the windshield and the sunroof and then later around the gas lid and rear driver side panel above the wheel well and now it is starting on the back door. This condition has been going on for approx. 2 yrs and it is getting worse. I had a verbal estimate to get my whole vehicle painted for between $5,500 - $6,500 Cdn. When I originally informed my Stratford Ontarion Toyota Dealership in 2014 about the paint pealing, they said Toyota would not stand behind there product as it was around 5 yrs old at the time the paint started pealing. This issue just keeps getting worse over time. I am now using my vehicle as advertising to inform people to not by a Toyota as they do not stand behind their product.

My car has the identical issue to another post. My car lives in a garage anytime we are not out driving. Suddenly the paint peeled off in strips from the windshield to the sunroof. I placed a complaint with Toyota and they had a rep check it out at my local dealership. Apparently he said the paint issues were normal and caused from paint chips. I do not have paint chips on the roof of the vehicle where the issue is. Of course with a 6 year old vehicle I have chips on the hood from flying rocks etc but not the roof. I am amazed based on previous paint complaints that Toyota will not take responsibility for fixing the issue. I have read they moved to an environmentally friendly paint and this is why there are so many issues. Lets just say after this being my 3rd Toyota I will no longer be purchasing this manufacturer.

This is the same problem as a number of others have reported. The Rav 4 has Blizzard pearl paint and the paint has all come off above the windshield to the sun roof. Apparently there was a manufacturing issue with this as all of the complaints are similar. The local Toyota dealer said they have received similar complaints but so far there is no solution offered by Toyota.

It appears all paint peeling problems are with the blizzard pearl white paint from information posted.

Absolutely disgusted with this problem. We are washing the car and all of a sudden notice blisters above the windshield between the sunroof and top windshield edge that weren't there the week prior. And then the paint starts to peel off in strips. So we take it to the dealer only to be told it will cost $1000 to repair and oh by the way, Toyota has DENIED the warranty because there haven't been ANY OTHER DOCUMENTED ISSUES related to paint.
Are you kidding me, with only 44,000 mile on it and no other spots, dents, chips, dings nothing, an absolutely clean car!!!! and now I have to pay $1000 to fix what is clearly a production issue!!!! I have had at least 7 other Toyota vehicles and have referred both my mother and mother-in-law to buy Toyota. BIG MISTAKE! No way am I going to pay to fix a production problem that Toyota should stand up and fix. So I will trade this car in for a completely different brand and Toyota can spend as much money on advertising to bring people into their dealerships to buy but will NEVER see another penny of mine or my family's! And from all the books I have read, where one displeased customer tells at least 13 other people, guess what Toyota, I will make it known to a heck of a lot more. If it costs you a couple hundred dollars in advertising to bring someone into your dealership to consider buying, it is now going to cost a lot more, at least in the area where I live!!!

In January, 2015, while washing my car at a manual car wash, chunks of paint came off with the water. The paint came off the roof, between the moon roof and windshield. In addition, the paint is peeling off the wheels (not sure when this started, but I believe they have been like that for a few months).
I'll be talking to a dealer about the problem.

I have a 2009 Toyota Rav 4 that we love driving. Our problem is that we are seeing significant blistering on the rims, but now we are also seeing paint peeling above the windshield.

On May 18, 2014, I noticed an area approximately 3" long by 1 1/2" wide of paint peeling off the roof of my 2009 Blizzard Pearl white Rav4 Limited, down to the bare metal/primer, adjacent to the front windshield. I also noticed that all 4 wheel rims were starting to bubble and peel. On June 3, 2014, I noticed my left rear wheel flare had started to peel. On June 11, 2014, the right rear wheel flare started to peel. On June 20, 2014, numerous small areas of the paint bubbling and cracking showed up on the roof of my vehicle between the front windshield and the sunroof.
I know that this is not a safety issue at this time, but with the continual progression of paint peeling around my windshield and sunroof, it will lead to water leakage and possibly electrical circuitry damage/malfunctions. The Simcoe Toyota dealership has viewed the paint peeling and as of today, has had NO other contact with me, except my forwarding them pictures, emails and a copy of the letter to Toyota Canada Inc. Toyota Canada Inc. has received a registered letter, pictures, and "Parts Reliability" chart from me and have advised me that they refuse the cost of any repairs to my vehicle. I would suggest that anyone with paint issues forward complaints to either the NHTSA at www.safercar.gov in the U.S. or to Transport Canada - Government of Canada - Defect Investigations and Recalls under their Defect Complaint Form. The more complaints registered the better chance of having this issue reviewed and resolved.

Bought the '09 used but only 3 years old with 38,000 miles. It looked great. I noticed paint flaking off the roof, just in front of the roof rack by 2013. By 2015 the majority of the roof was flaking to the entire back end. By 2017 I noticed flaking on the structural side beams (between the front window and front seat windows). It has low mileage and should last another 5 years, at least, but for trade in value, I've been told I'd not get more that $4,500 for a trade-in so I'm looking for painting options. Now I find out that Toyota has a history of bad paint jobs for this model from 2009-2013 (how lucky can I be) and Toyota has taken no responsibility for this, even though it's been discovered that the RAV4s had faulty primer. I've gotten 'touch up' estimates of $1,100 and full paint restorations of $6,500. And while I enjoy my RAV, I'm not sure another Toyota is in my future. What else don't I know???
