Apparently Toyota has had issues with the Rav 4 and several other vehicles using oil at alarming rates, due to inadequate design/quality of the piston rings used in these vehicle. They have issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) to address the issue, but often apparently deny that there is one when confronted with this problem (at the local dealer). I am not certain when my (or any) vehicle began to experience the problem, as I purchased it when it already had 90,000 miles on it, but it is using about 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles or so. NOT ACCEPTABLE. I am still in the process of pursuing Toyota to get some satisfaction on the matter, and will update once I get further along this course.

In 2012 I had an oil change at a Toyota Dealer at about 45,000 miles , the tech forgot to put the engine cap back, I drove the car back home and around town over 50 miles with no oil in engine, I smelled burning oil to discover the engine compartment covered in oil! The dealer towed the 2010 Toyota Rav4 back to dealer, I expressed that I wanted a new car. They said they will only clean the engine because I didn't lease the car from them.
Since 2012 then I noticed unusual oil consumption and notified the dealer, they replied that's normal with high mileage engines. Since 2012 the oil consumption increased, now in 2018 at 228,000 miles about a quart of oil every 14 days isn't normal! I'm at the end of my rope. I'm no mechanic but I'm sure the damage driving with no oil in engine should have a direct correlation to my current problem.
The car is in great condition but for the oil consumption issue. I have friends that have 2010 Rav's with high mileage and don't have the same issue.I had the PCV valve change with no improvement.
