RAV4 XLE 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 5,129 miles

The cruise is very erratic (surging) makes the car feel like it is being held back and then letting it go. When climbing it down shifts from 6th to 5th and then drops into 4th when I reach the top it stays in 4th till the car starts down the other side. Before it upshifts to 5th the rpms jump up another 500 - 700 for just a nanosecond. At times the surging almost makes you feel like you are going to be seasick. told toyota is coming up with an update for the computer

RAV4 LE 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 2,100 miles

The cruise control is too sensitive. On even a moderate hill at highway speeds it downshifts from 6th gear to 5th gear too early, then slams into 4th gear making the RPMs shoot up over 4000. It then may keep shifting from 4th to 5th and back and not shift back to 6th until I'm well over the top of the hill. I can drive the same hill with the cruise off and not have it downshift at all. I have had it checked at the dealer. They say all Rav4's do it so it's normal. I have stopped using the cruise because I am concerned about engine and transmission damage from the harsh shifting and high RPMs. I drive a lot new and used vehicles of various makes for my job and have never had a cruise control act this erratically.
