RAV4 EXL 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 58,000 miles

Screaming I just paid $450 to clean fuel injection. Now the parking brake malfunction while disco lights on my dash. First estimate $1400 and brake shop said at the mercy of dealership for parts. The brakes will not unlock so my tire and brakes damaged before relized tire was not turning! I would have never purchased this car. I thought toyota more reliable!

RAV4 XLE 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 2,400 miles

We recently purchases a 2019 Toyota Rav4.

At around 2,400 miles the electronic parking brake malfunctioned. I started the vehicle as normal, pressed down on the brake pedal, moved the gear selector into park. The parking brake indicator light in the dash went out as normal. I released the brake and the vehicle would not move. I applied light throttle and could fill resistance from the rear tires.

I shifted into reverse and tried again, with the same result. I shifted back into park, applied the brakes and manually cycled the electronic parking brake switch by the shift lever, this did nothing. The parking brake light on the dash also remained off during this entire time. (When the parking brake actuator engages and releases and is correctly functioning, it makes an audible noise.) No noise could be detected this time, I believe the actuator was not working at all. I then tried turning the engine off and back on, but that didn't resolve the issue.

Not sure what to do, shifted into drive again and applied very light throttle, and this time with a loud clunking noise the rear brakes freed up. The vehicle would now move normally. I shifted back into park and cycled the electronic brake on and off using the switch and by shifting in and out of park. The system seems to be functioning properly again.

This vehicle has never been off-road or even on a gravel road, or subjected to below freezing conditions, there is no possibility of any type of environmental contamination into the brake system. This problem could not only leave your vehicle disabled, but it is also a potential safety hazard.

Update from Jun 26, 2019: Dealer wants us to wait until it happens again and have the vehicle towed in.
