sunroof/moonroof spontaneously shattered while driving sunroof/moonroof spontaneously shattered while driving sunroof/moonroof spontaneously shattered while driving sunroof/moonroof spontaneously shattered while driving sunroof/moonroof spontaneously shattered while driving sunroof/moonroof spontaneously shattered while driving

While driving Interstate 70 on July 19, my wife and I were shocked by what sounded like a loud explosion from the roof of the car. My first thought was that my Thule cargo box had blown open. As quickly as I could, I pulled off the interstate. Once we were stopped, I opened the sunroof shade to see if the cargo box was still there. Pieces of glass poured down on us. I closed the shade and we got out of the car to look. The sunroof/moonroof (whichever it is I will call it a sunroof) was shattered. I removed some of the shattered glass from the sunroof shade.

As we were in the middle of nowhere, late on a Friday, we continued to our destination. Once there, I removed more glass, but I couldn't get it all. I also put plastic over the opening to protect the car from rain.

On Monday, I called a local Toyota dealer and they were booked up. I wasn't able to get it into a dealer until I returned to Maryland.

Toyota refused to take responsibility. Nothing hit the car and the Thule cargo box made it even less likely that anything could have fallen on the sunroof.

Jim Coleman Toyota's service representative informed me that the sunroof frame needs to be replaced, as it was damaged. This will cost in the vicinity of $6000. He said it was unlikely that this would be covered under the extended warranty that I purchased with the car. The service rep said something had hit the roof. I told him that I needed to partially cycle the sunroof to get glass out, since it was a hazard to drive while having bits of glass coming down on me.

Until now, I have been quite happy with the RAV4 Prime and Toyota. Now, I am having second thoughts.

Unfortunately, the class action suit handled by Lemberg LLC for faulty sunroof glass is only for 2021 RAV4s with the panoramic roof. If anyone knows of another class action suit, please let me know.
