Sienna CE 3.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 40,000 miles

Van was only off warranty for about 6 months when the rear tailgate latch handle completely snapped off. The door could not be opened until it was replaced.

This is pretty pathetic. Fortunately it was not outrageously expensive to fix (at a local mechanic's shop, not the dealer), even with a Toyota part. But it should not have happened at all, much less so early in the life of the vehicle.

When this first happened I called Toyota. All I got was "Ma'am it is a plastic part that breaks" my response was, Why is a car company with the reputation of Toyota using plastic parts? Needless to say I had to pay to have it fixed. Not happy!

The back gate door handle breaks off when you use it. It has happened to two of our friends too. They had a 2000 and 2001 model respectively. So I would say it is a design defect.
