I currently have a 2007 Toyota Sienna with 130K miles. My car is good condition and has been very reliable over the last several years. Recently both the drivers and passenger sliding doors stopped working and the wire that is part of the door mechanism popped and is now hanging from the back windows. I am at this time unable to open either door and there is no way to manually open the doors. I have children and they are having to climb from the front to the read. There was no indicator that this was becoming an issue. It as if Toyota was aware of this problem, however they are not addressing it without charging outrageous prices. The dealer claimed wear and term, however my door may be opened and closed 1 to 2 times per day, if that. The response was very nonchalant as if was not a big deal. I am very disappointed in the issue and more disappointed in the response from my dealer, whom I have been dealing with since 1997. Toyota really needs to address this issue. This is not only a mechanical malfunction, it is a safety issue.

We had just returned from a trip, and picked up our Sienna minivan at the parking lot. I opened the left side sliding door, put some luggage in the back seat, and then closed the door. The door slide closed but did not latch. I cycled the door again, and it still did not latch. I tried the right door and the same thing happened. We had to drive home with the warning beeping in our ears (this comes on if the car is in gear and the doors are not latched). The next morning we took the vehicle to our Toyota dealer, and they said this is a very common problem, but our car was out of warranty, so they want $3700 to fix the doors. To us, this is a serious safety matter that the dealership admits is due to faulty parts -- they say they have seen a lot of this problem on Siennas. A child could fall out in traffic, or a piece of luggage could become a hazard to other drivers. I would like to see Toyota be compelled to cover this repair regardless of mileage -- they said the normal 36,000 mile warranty was extended to 120,000 miles for this problem, which they acknowledge as a defect, but that does not help the many Toyota owners who keep their cars longer. June 12, 2012, odometer 45,000 miles, 2 hours from home, drivers side manual door would not close and latch shut. Called nashua, nh Toyota dealership, told lots of problems with doors, need to make appointment, average repair over $1,000. Took to my regular mechanic and problem temporarily fixed for $244.80(latch assy seized up. Remove, lube, reinstall. If repair doesn't last, new part needed. Cost for part only, $570.23, plus labor). July 2013, odometer 65,000 miles, same door not latching again, door slides open during acceleration. Called Toyota dealership in nashua, nh, told door not covered under "latch assembly extended warranty" because door is manual. Have made appointment with my regular mechanic again to see what can be done to fix problem. My vehicle has 2 sliding doors, drivers side is manual, passenger side is automatic. However, the manual door has a motor and latch assembly to pull the door in and latch it after it's been slid closed. This function is not working properly. The extended warranty I received from Toyota in July 2012 states " this warranty extension is for your rear sliding door latch assemblies for a period of 9 years from the vehicles date of first use or 120,000 miles whichever comes first". there is no mention the door must be an automatic door. I believe Toyota is trying to limit how many warranty fixes they do by giving customers incorrect information. I'm also beginning to have problems with the passenger side automatic door not closing. However I can only afford the time and money for one fix at a time. There are huge safety issues here and Toyota should be held responsible.

Multiple times when the temperature gets below 60 degrees, the rear hatch door does not stay open, it will automatically close and has trapped myself as well as my husband and banged my son in the head. The rear hatch rubber door handle melted due to heat during the summer. I had to cover the door handle with plastic in order to open the rear hatch. During cold weather, the rear hatch cannot be opened due to the melting door handle. I have taken the vehicle to the dealer where the dealer advised that the door handle needed to be replaced at a pretty high cost. The vehicle was not repaired. I have read numerous complaints online regarding the melting door handle for the year make and model vehicle.

Toyota did cover it under warranty after I called the Toyota customer care number because it was just days after the 3 year warranty had expired. 8/11 right side rear mechanism broke (other door). Cable snapped again. Told we should not use door until repaired which we will be paying for this time. Seems like these doors are poorly designed and dangerous when inoperable.

Rear passenger automatic door will not open. In 2009, while the vehicle was under warranty, a similar problem occurred and the dealership replaced part # 69631-08020 (control, slide dr). When I discovered the new problem, my 3-year old son was in his car-seat on the passenger side, so I had to enter through the driver side rear door. I'm glad this was not an emergency situation, for had it been, my son's life could have been endangered. Edmunds.com lists numerous instances of similar problems. Clearly Toyota needs to issue a recall on this crucial safety issue.

The handle (hatch opening mechanism) on our 2007 Toyota Sienna deteriorated/melted last year and only works intermittently. It is very difficult to open / engage, leaves black residue on your hands in the hot conditions (e.g. summer) and does not work well in cold conditions (e.g. winter).
