problem #2

Aug 142014

Solara 3.2lV6

  • Manual transmission
  • 46,000 miles

11/4/13, pulling in parking spot, car suddenly accelerated, engine racing, brakes not stopping me, I thought the car was going to go down a flight of stairs by the parking spot ( at a hospital), but a cement parking pole/guide stopped me. I scraped bumper and dented bumper. Thought I did something wrong............until yesterday.

8/14/14 - pulling into a parking spot facing building, engine revs up, races, accelerates, thought I was going to hit wall, but a cement parking bar on the ground stopped me. Brakes got all spongy, but finally kicked in I guess. Small part of bumper did touch wall and scraped bumper, but under-bumper area is scraped from cement bar.

It was like......both times, the car was going to "run away", and I had no control. I have only 46,000 miles on the car.

I see that the 2006 was not in the recall for this sudden acceleration, but 2007 was. Now I am afraid, as it happened twice, but in parking lots with no car in front of me. I fear it could happen in traffic.

problem #1

Solara SLE 6 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 45,600 miles

On Aug. 7, 2010, at 5:00 pm, I was pulling into a parking space going rather slow with my foot on my brake ready to stop within about 2 feet of the car in front of me. As I braked it to come to a complete stop my brake pedal went to the floor, at the same time my car started accelerating. I didn't have control and my car ran forward with force enough to push the parked car between 9-12 feet out of it's space. In the short seconds it happened, all I could do was turn my steering wheel to the left as the engine was still reving up. I jumped a curb as I was parked about 5 inches from the parking lot island with bushes and trees, and ended up hitting a tree and my car stopped. I turned the engine off and threw my keys on the passinger seat. I was in shock and had to sit for a minute and recoup what had just happened. There was no reason for this accident. I had just parked at two other stores right before this one. I was not in a hurry and was focused on parking my car.

I had my car towed to the dealer, as I didn't want to drive a possessed car. That's what it felt like. I never had any evidence of this happening ahead of time. As far as my mats, I never noticed them moving upward. I think it has something to do with the brake. Something cross-wired between the brake & gas pedal, and it wasn't my foot. I drive with one foot, not senile, or on any mind boggling meds or drinks. This may be the first time for this Solara to have a problem.

I love my car and always felt safe, and felt as I was part of the car. I love driving. Today the dealership called and asked if I wanted my car fixed. The Toyota engineers were there today and never put a yellow ribbon around it, so this means it's not the car! I will not have it fixed until they fix whatever made it accerlerate along with the body damage. I'm afraid I may have a problem to fight. Why don't they just fix it and be done? I'm afraid to drive it as it is. I always thought Toyota's were great cars and I still do.
