The contact owns a 2001 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that the subframe of the vehicle severely rusted. The contact stated that the subframe rusted through at the shock absorbers. The vehicle was taken to prime Toyota - boston (1605 vfw pkwy, West roxbury, MA 02132), and was informed that the subframe needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 175,000. The consumer provided photos.

The contact owns a 2001 Toyota Tacoma. While the vehicle was undergoing service to change the timing belt, the independent mechanic was unable to be place the vehicle on a lift. The mechanic stated that the frame was so rotted that it could fracture. The independent mechanic advised the contact to call a Toyota dealer and the manufacturer to determine their guidelines. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was waiting on a response to determine their recommended solution. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer issued 21 tsbs for the structure, but there was no recall on the vehicle pertaining to the frame. The failure mileage was not available.

The contact owns a 2001 Toyota Tacoma. While working on the vehicle, the contact noticed the undercarriage was corroded from the mid point to the rear bumper. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact also stated that the vehicle was subject to a rust prevention treatment in August of 2010. Glenn Toyota dealer in frankfort, ky completed the treatment on the exterior of the frame, but not the interior. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the extended warranty was expired. The approximate failure mileage was 190,000.

The frame has corrosion. The local Toyota dealership informed me they would not repair this item. They said the only remedy was a frame under coating but that this offer had expired. This is the same issue that was discovered on countless other Toyota trucks. I do not understand why this item is not a required repair. This truck has been kept in excellent shape. The problem is due to a condition beyond my control. The truck was stationary when the corrosion was found. This truck was also found to have a corroded spare tire holder, which is currently under recall. I believe the frame corrosion should be repaired as well.

Was driving about 45 mph - hit a pothole & the frame broke on both sides, behind the cab !!! almost an accident frame was rotted out from the inside !!!! but I wasn't on interstate at the time I called Toyota U.S.a. ----they said -not their problem !!! I would not want someone driving on congested freeway at a high rate of speed & this happened someone could be killed !!!!!

I bought this truck in June 2014 from a private dealership in Virginia, then moved from Maryland to seattle. I had it inspected in Maryland, it passed, but I discovered that the frame was rusted completely through- the leaf springs are not even attached, making it unsafe to drive. I contacted Toyota, and the previous owner had the rust treatment applied in 2011, but the extended warranty expired in 2013, so they are refusing to help. I have only had this truck 9 months and it is basically worthless and dangerous.

Brought vehicle to dealer for recall notice on spare tire mount. Later that day, dealer called and said they could not put vehicle on lift to check the mount, as frame was so rusted they feared it would break. I was informed at this time that there had been an earlier recall regarding this issue, but that it had been discontinued. I told the dealer I never received a recall for frame corrosion. I called Toyota and was told that the recall had been extended but was no longer active, and that since the vehicle was not brought in while the recall was active, the 15 year warranty on the frame was void. Consequently, all costs to repair would be totally out of pocket. Dealer then told me that in the present condition, the trade-in value of the vehicle was now $200-$300 instead of anywhere near the book value of this model ($6000-$7000).

2001 Toyota Tacoma. Consumer writes in regards to excessive corrosion recall. A local mechanic informed the consumer, there was a tremendous amount of corrosion and the vehicle was not safe to drive. The dealer repaired the spare lift tire plate under the recall. However, they stated the recall for the frame had expired and they would not do the repair.

Following routine service inspection on 4/2/2014, significant perforation of my 2001 Toyota Tacoma 4X4 truck frame was identified, due to conditions consistent with rusting. According to a 2012 Toyota dealership diagnostic, no indication of rust was noted during the dealership service inspection. Also, no hard copy documentation has been provided by Toyota corporation regarding an alleged voluntary recall campaign to address corrosion of frame. According to the Toyota corporation case worker assigned, he was unable to provide any hard copy documentation of said voluntary recall campaign notice regarding corrosion of truck frame; it should be noted that the case worker did say he could provide 'verbal' confirmation that notification was sent to my residence at the time. At this time, I am currently considering legal action, pending further review of case.

The frame on the vehicle is rusting. I didn't realize that Tacoma's had rusty frame issues until after I purchased the vehicle. I am concerned that this frame will cause unsafe driving conditions if something gives out while driving. I am also concerned about the resale value of a year class of vehicles that are known to have rusty frames.

Bought my Toyota Tacoma about a year an a half ago. Its a 2001 V6 extra cab 4X4. Brought it to the Toyota deal on rt 37 East in toms river N.J and ask them to inspect the frame. They said it was in good condition. Just the other day I brought it in to a garage in town for an oil change and the check engine light was on. Come to find out the fuel tank is rusting and has a hole in it. Also the frame is severally rusted, the cross bar that holds the fuel tank is crumbling along with the rest of the frame. This whole rusting frame issue needs to be addressed not only is my family and my life in danger but so are the other drivers around me.

The frame was rusted, and we were aware of recalls. 2 weeks ago we had it inspected at the dealer where we bought it. The mechanic told us the vehicle was un-driveable. The service department sent the information to Toyota but the recall claim was denied. The mechanic gave us a number to call to place a claim. The representative told us we had been mailed a letter in 2011 saying the vehicle needed undercoating. She admitted that it was something Toyota was doing legally to avoid having to honor the recall claim. She also said that the undercoating would have been useless since defective steel was used to construct the frame. Again, the case manager told us the claim was being denied.

I purchased the best truck I could ever wish for, 2001 Toyota Tacoma; it's an xtra cab with trd with the SR5. Today at 113500 miles it still looks and runs showroom new. But it has the rust on the frame and bad too. Toyota refuses to help in any way. In 2012 the frame was perfect, now it is almost eaten through. I love this truck but it is unsafe to drive and I am very displeased with how they are handling the situation. At 113500 miles I opt to go with Toyota compared to Chevrolet because Toyota had a wonderful reputation on reliable vehicles and I was sold on that. When the recall was sent out, I was living in Virginia and battling cancer so I missed the recall. I believe Toyota should warrant their product or close down their plants if they won?T honor the issues at hand. I want a new frame or at least another truck with my engine and transmission, my baby is gorgeous. I am now on a fixed income with blood clots in my lungs due to the cancer I need my truck.
