This is a very unsafe condition and if Toyota knows that it is a common problem, as I am finding out it is, they should have a recall and eat the repair cost.

Power steering became somewhat stiff in both directions but appeared to be minor and intermittent initially. Checked tire pressure and fluid level and both were fine. The serpentine belt was inspected and considering the mileage it appeared to be ok and have the proper tension. The steering became much more difficult within the next 75 miles or so and the steering wheel would not return to center after any type of turn without manual help. Luckily for me I was the driver when the issue became serious, had my wife been driving she would never been able to manage the steering and could have been involved in a very serious accident, certainly resulting in some type of damage, personal injury, or worse. I contacted my dealership describing the steering problem and an appointment was immediately scheduled. Upon inspection I was told the problem lies in the steering shaft components and the repairs would cost around $1100.00 and parts would be ordered and repairs made after they arrive. It appears that many others have reported the same type steering issues so this is not an isolated, individual, incident. This is a very serious issue that apparently is being ignored by Toyota and in my opinion a safety recall should be issued and the proper repairs made, the same as my frame and leaf springs recall and repairs were and at Toyotas expense. Having said that, I will gladly pay the $1100.00 bill from my pocket thereby giving me somewhat a "peace of mine feeling" that hopefully myself, my passengers, or any innocent vehicles around me will probably be safe because of what I am doing on my own and at my expense. Toyota, if you are listening........ I applaud you for taking responsibility for the Tacoma frame corrosion, leaf spring, and front floor mat safety recall issues, addressing them as you should have. As a "two vehicle" Toyota owning household (the other model a Venza) we have always felt safe and have been extremely satisfied and loyal members of the Toyota brand "family". However my loyalty to the Toyota brand is being severely challenged unfortunately. This may be the most serious to date "safety issue" campaign yet that you have been involved with yet and apparently are choosing to ignore the individual safety of certain year model Toyota Tacoma owners and for that I can't give you low enough marks. A very disappointed and unfortunately very possibly last Toyota buyer, you have definitely dropped the ball this time, shame on you !! Don Carlson Shepherd, MI
