The truck started bucking as I slowed down for a red light and stalled at the light. When I depressed the clutch pedal and turned the key to start it, the truck lurched forward and started in first gear, but would not shift our of first. I made it home in first gear, had it towed to the repair shop for a clutch replacement. I contacted Toyota and the gentleman told me it was probably the way I used the clutch that shortened its life. My previous Toyota had 275,000 miles on it when I sold it. It had a clutch and I never had a problem with it. It's a mystery.
Update from Jan 1, 2016: Well, I made it to 118,726 miles before the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder had to be replaced. Once again I had to drive home in first gear and have the truck towed to the dealer for repairs. I was told at the dealership that they rarely see clutch problems on Tacoma trucks. I've owned vehicles with standard transmissions for the past 40 years and this is the only vehicle I've owned that had chronic clutch problems. It remains a mystery.
