A chirping sound began being emitted from the transmission. The chirp was present at all times except when the clutch was depressed. The problem was diagnosed as a throw out bearing wiggling on the Pilot shaft. The throw out bearing scored the Pilot shaft. A new throw out bearing was installed and the Pilot shaft smoothed with emory cloth. This solution solved the problem immediately, but within a year, the same chirp returned. The throw out bearing is again vibrating on the Pilot shaft.

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. Whenever the contact attempted to switch gears from 4th to 5th he noticed that the RPM's would remain constant or rise for a period of 10 seconds. The failure occurred at various speeds. The vehicle was taken to the dealership where the contact was informed that the vehicle was working properly. The contact has noticed the failure since the day the vehicle was purchased. The failure mileage was 26,041 updated 4/26/10 the consumer stated during 4th and 5th shifting, the accelerator pedal would stick. He also experienced erratic idling while in 1st gear. Transmission fails to go into gear. This is a common problem with the aisin AY6 6-speed manual transmission in the Tacoma from what I see on internet forums. A danger results in crossing an intersection, merging or many other unforeseen incidents where it is nearly impossible to get the transmission into the next gear. In my case, it is particularly difficult for the 1-2, 2-3 shifts and reverse. I have taken my truck to Toyota numerous times and in short was more or less told to "take a hike" and sometimes in a manner than was not the most pleasant means. Throwout bearing also squeaks since brand new (tsb posted?), and Toyota's only action is to replace it with another bearing that will only squeak again anyway. I do not get why I have to constantly take a truck that is barely driven in for a complaint. Something is not right, I (we) paid for a Toyota and their reputation, but this was my last purchase from Toyota ever. It seems that to get anything replaced on every vehicle affected by these profound issues, that someone must die again as with the gas pedal incidents.

I have a 2006 Toyota Tacoma X-runner trim and it has had an issue with the transmission since I bought it. The transmission will not shift from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd and can easily be repeated even though Toyota tech's always state that the problem could not be duplicated even though I have done it with two techs test rides. Also, it cannot be downshifted easily. If I am merging I cannot shift into the next gear and have had a few close calls. Also, more recently I cannot shift into reverse which seems like the same forward shifting, except I am not moving. I had recently parked in a spot that had a slight incline and when it came time to back out, I could not get it into gear and kept rolling forward more and more each time till I hit the bump stop in the parking stall and damaged the underside of the front bumper and from which I had to get some help to push it backwards out of the spot.

I purchased a Toyota Tacoma 2006 new and from day one had problems with the vehicle over revving on start up, which is very damaging to an engine in cold climates. It also between shifting from 3rd to 4th, and 4th to 5th gears the RPM's will not come down to enable one to shift properly and not only makes for a road dangerous condition but it also causes damage to the entire drive train. I've been unsuccessful at trying to take care of this problem with Toyota, quite frankly they have a very bad attitude with this whole matter and to give you an example, I was told by one dealership that maybe I should learn how to shift faster. Please assist me.

: the contact stated when accelerating in 1st gear at 15 mph, the vehicle stalled on 9 occasions. At other times, the shifter would not go into reverse. There was a clunking noise when shifting occurred that became constant as the problem worsened. The vehicle was taken to a service dealer but the problem was not corrected. An appointment was scheduled with another service dealer. The fuel warning light was not activated at the proper volume of fuel. These problems happened shortly after the carpeting was replaced due to water leaking through the firewall. The manufacturer was notified. The consumer stated the vehicle jumped out of park and into reverse. On numerous occasions the truck stalled. Updated 12/18/06.
