At about 47,000 miles and just over 4 years of owning my 2018 Toyota Tacoma Cement Grey, I noticed clear coat peeling on the roof and hood of my truck exposing the base paint. The dealer I bought the truck from doesn't have a collision center so I took it to a local dealer. Their Collision Director looked at it, said it's definitely a manufacturing defect. He told me no matter how many times I cleaned or waxed my truck that this would happen anyway. He acknowledge Toyota has a known problem with the paint. He took pictures and told me that he'd reach out to Toyota to see if they would correct or cover some of the repair cost. He said he'd get back to me.
After several calls, I got the hint that nothing is going to be done. I reached out to the assistance service manager at the dealer I bought the truck from and was told that I had to work with Toyota Corporate. I called Toyota Corporate who told me that there is no open recall on the paint for my vehicle VIN so there is nothing they can do. If I had known that Toyota had a problem with their paint, I would have never bought it. The roof and hood of my truck look like they are over 10+ years old.

My truck is 2 years old. It has roof top damage and now developing hood damage. It is still under warranty. I took it to a Toyota dealership to get checked. A service representative took a 10 minute look and said, “it’s an outside source of influence†that is damaging my truck. I asked for clarity, he said, the sun and the soap I use to wash my vehicle. I replied, “the sunâ€. I found his findings a bit ridiculous being that the car was brand new and I don’t believe that a new car's paint job has a 2-year life span. This rep has experience with oil changes, mufflers and electrical problems, not paint.
I took my truck to a body shop where they have staff specializing in body work. The associate told me that it’s a factory defect and that Toyota is known for poor paint. He suggested I call corporate office which I did. I was told that they are going to stand by the findings of the service rep at the dealership and that there was nothing they can do. I find it hard to believe that I’m still paying on a 2 year old vehicle that will soon look old and very used. I’m very disappointed in the service I received at both the dealership and with Toyota corporate office.

I paid a lot of money for a Toyota Tacoma 2018 Barcelona Red because they were supposed to hold their value & be one of the best trucks out. A couple years later, I noticed the clear coat was cracking & the paint peeling on the hood. It only had less than 20,000 miles on it. It should not look like an old paint job from the 1900's. This is the worst clear coat/ paint job I've ever seen in 60 yrs. It's embarrassing to drive. It has now spread from the hood to the roof, handles, sides.
I have taken it to the Toyota dealer & they offer absolutely NO HELP. I do not feel it is my responsibility to pay to have a fairly new Truck with 50,000 miles on it, painted. Toyota needs to stand behind what they made. Also was sold an expensive maint. package that didn't cover squat. I would like to know why toyota knows of this issue, they already had a class action for the white paint. Well, mine is red & it needs a new paint job NOW before it gets totally rusted & destroyed. Toyota is responsible for their own clear coat & paint issues. not the owner. I paid too much money for something to look this BAD.
