Tacoma SR5 6 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 2,200 miles

Started with the Check Engine light coming on at 2200 miles. I made an appointment with Toyota on Tuesday and they couldn't find anything so they reset the light. I left and the next day check engine light came back on so I went back to Toyota. They used their scanner equipment and found a problem, but they had to take the bed off of the truck to see. After the bed was off, you could see a hose with a small hole in it.

Apparently Toyota is buying their Fuel Tanks from a supplier who is using soy in lieu of petroleum in the manufacturing of the hoses and wiring. Toyota says a mouse ate through the hose. Since the hose is part of the fuel tank the fuel tank has to be replaced, after they removed the bed of the truck to get to the hose. The Toyota service people say the soy products attract rodents and Toyota warranties DO NOT cover rodent damage.

It takes 4 days to get the tank and install. So I ask what's going to keep it from happening again, and the Service people's answer was "not a thing, some people have been back 3 times with the same problem". (What's the definition of stupid?)

Why would they have a sealed fitting at the tank? Why not protect the hose since it's just a cheap 1/2'' diameter plastic hose. This is my 5th Tacoma. I have bought 4 from this same dealer. I thought I would be driving a Toyota until I couldn't drive anymore. I guess I'll start looking at the Ford Rangers.
