We had a light on the dash. Took the Tundra in for service. They came back with the O2 sensor being replaced which we paid for. Light immediately came back on within 4 miles of the dealership where we bought and get serviced our truck. I turned around and took it back. They then wanted to keep the truck and evaluate it. I then used a rental car. it seemed to take several days but they came back to me saying the catalytic converter was bad and needed to be replaced. I could not believe it as this is a Toyota and we have had several. I bit the bullet and told then to replace it as what choice did I have. We were just out of warranty and so all this was on us. They finally called me and so I went to pick up our truck. Paid for it.

Got 5 miles away and the light came back on. I turned around and once again was in the rental. This time the factory rep got involved and it turned out to be the computer needed to be adjusted.

My real complaint is that the dealer did not help us on this. I was out the full amount for the catalytic converter when the real issue was the computer.

We love our Tundra, Tacomas, corolla, Cressida, and Carina. Overall, I like the dealership but I definitely am still upset over the bill for wrong service issue.

My 2005 Toyota Tundra 4.0 V-6 Has the INFAMOUS CHECK ENGINE P0420 CODE. The first time it came on was about a year ago on Dec 2010. My truck had 62421 K Miles at the time. I took to a Toyota Dealer and they turn 0ff the check engine light. After a less than a month passed by the light came on again and I took my truck to an Auto Zone Store. I was told that the Scanner WAS SHOWING A P0420 CODE AND THAT WAS MUST PROBABLY THE Oxygen Sensors. My vehicles uses two Ox2 Sensors, before each catalytic converter, one one each manifold AND TWO Down Stream Air/Fuel Sensors after the catalytics. I Bought The Ox2 Oxygen and installed them. Everything was OK for about a month. Then The check Engine light came up again. I took my truck to a Specialize Emissions Shop and I was told THAT THE P0420 CODE IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE TOYOTA VEHICLES Especially the TUNDRAS. IT IS SHOWN AS A CODE STATING THAT THE CATALYTIC IS BELOW THE THRESHOLD VALUES. THE CATALYTIC FAILED LESS THAN 63,000 MILES and LESS THAN 5 YEARS OF REGISTER VEHICLE DATE. IT COST MORE THAN $ 725.00 Each Installed. Ever Since for the past year I HAVE TO LIVE WITH THIS NIGHTMARE I have to be disconnecting the battery negative pole, EVERY TWO DAYS TO ERASE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND CODE P0420. The vehicle IS BURNING A TOO LEAN AN A/F MIXTURE AND ITS MILLAGE AND PERFORMANCE IS POOR. I Contacted two Toyota Dealers in my area and the service advisors told me that THE FEDERAL EMISSIONS COMPONENTS ARE NOT COVERED AS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THIS DEFECT{Sic} I READ ON ANOTHER INTERNET SITE THAT TOYOTA EXTENDED THE WARRANTY UP TO EIGHT YEARS OR 80,000 Miles for this DEFECTIVE COMPONENT. Can someone help me and perhaps thousands of other VICTIMS of the INFAMOUS P0420 FAILURE CODE...
