I bought the truck used in 2008 that 23000 miles. Right after I bought it I had to have rack and pinion replaced due to leak.
I got back out moved to Kansas, where this problem began. I was driving and the trans had always shifted hard. I asked Toyota and they said it was normal. Then it went from shifting hard to trying to kill you when it shifted and would kill the engine when put in reverse.
I took it to Little Apple Toyota in Manhattan Kansas. They said 4 out of the 6 solenoids had gone bad and the rear seal was leaking. It was repaired under warranty. Right after that, the truck got put into storage while I deployed to Afghanistan. It stayed in storage for a year. The truck was driven occasionally while being stored. I came back ,got the truck back started driving it again and it was ok for about 6 months, then started taking longer than normal to go into reverse.
It wasn't real bad so I didn't worry about it with the sealed transmission and all. About a month after that, it started this real bad shudder in reverse. By now I'm out of the service and back in my home town. I took the truck to a local auto repair shop here and they found that the rear seal was installed incorrectly and looked like it was installed with a screwdriver entire bottom of seal smashed.
They checked the fluid level and found that it was 3 quarts low and refilled with World Speck transmission fluid. It still shuddered in reverse but other gears were ok. for about 2 days, then lost reverse all together and 3rd gear started slipping. I found the paperwork from Little Apple found that the truck has less than 19000 miles on it since they fixed it.
Little Apple said its not there fault so they wont fix it. Toyota head office said they were going to talk to them about a solution. Needless to say Little Apple Toyota screwed up the seal which caused me to burn up transmission and now they don't want to fix their f*ck up.

transmission does not engage fully/ I can feel it slip and there is a burning metallic/fluid smell. It happens only when first engaged in drive then slowly catches up. So I have to remember to put in "low" then shift up to drive. annoying, took to local Vacaville toyota dealer and gave me a $3400 estimate! wow. Said it could not be fixed and needed a replacement of transmission.
cannot understand why the dealer told me I need an whole new transmission, they say it is an "all world transmission" which was explained to me as it will never need servising for the life of the truck. But cannot be fixed, only replaced/ they recommended an new or rebuilt- new $3400, rebuilt $2600. They said they have seen this issue before and said it would only get worse. So far I have been lucky but it is still driveable, but need to put in "low gear" then shift up to drive all the time which is extreemly annoying. Im just afraid to go any distances outside of town, just hoping that is does not get worse. My wife refuses to drive it and sometimes is a huge issue because we have 4 children. Cannot afford a new or rebuilt transmission due to a faulty part or whatever in a transmission that cannot be serviced, only replaced?????? Unaceptable.

The truck only has 170,000 miles and the transmission is starting to slip when you move forward. My truck has a lot of issues, I changed the old valve covers, put a new ignition coils, a new rack and pinion, put a new ball joint on the driver side because it broke on the middle of the road.
I also replaced the seal gasket on the main oil filter because it was leaking bad and make everything looks worse from underneath all the oil that's leaking from oil filter. And the covers on gaskets eat all the boots from the rack and pinion, and I have to be in replace Bank 1 and 2 sensors an oxygen sensors. This Cadillac convertible it really is a nightmare with how much I have already spent, and I have to continue spending in order to keep it running. I'm also finding the drivers seat is so awful you'll feel the metal on your butt. When you sit on it, it's so uncomfortable.
