Toyota frame rust: I was informed by my local mechanic today that my 2006 Toyota Tundra will not pass Virginia's yearly safety inspection because of hole in the frame as a result of corrosion. My truck participated in Toyota's limited service campaign D0D in 2014 and a rust resistant coating was applied to combat a known corrosion issue with their truck frames. I was told the frame was inspected, found to be clean, and the coating applied. I contacted Toyota and was told "there is nothing we can do for you". I have found existing lawsuits addressing this exact issue on other Toyota models including 2007 and 2008 Tundra. The settlement in these cases involve complete frame replacement. It is obvious to me that Toyota knows there is something wrong, but choosing to do nothing.

Feb 2019 - Toyota Tundra at 92K miles was inspected by NJ Toyota dealership after owner complained of steering issues and concerns on the condition of the frame. Toyota technician inspected frame and noted "unsafe to drive" due to rust, perforations, corrosion in frame and steering rack no longer attached to frame...."vehicle is unsafe to drive" May 2018 - same Tundra w 78K miles passed Virginia safety inspection from private station April 2018- same Tundra w 78K miles was inspected by md Toyota dealership service department..."frame rusted out in numerous spots. Truck not safe to drive" April 2018 - same Tundra w 78K miles is given a result of "pass" by private md inspection station (no mention of frame condition) March 2018 - same Tundra w 77K miles was inspected by a private md inspection station and truck failed..."struts/shocks completely rusted, rack and pinion mounting rusted out, dangerous, brake hose rusted connection, frame compromised by rust...and frame of truck fails"

My 2006 Tundra is like new in all respects but one; all Toyota recommended routine and periodic maintenance performed by copeland Toyota for 13 years; frame has failed due to corrosion. Upon frame recall for corrosion in 2014, copeland indicated frame was "not that bad" and said they would just apply corrosion protection coating instead of replacing frame. I trusted and accepted their advice. Since then, Toyota forums indicate spray on coating exacerbates corrosion problem. Copeland replaced power steering unit last year; when I looked under truck to see new unit, was shocked at condition of frame. Next routine service appointment I asked copeland for their opinion on frame corrosion and they told me frame has failed. Poor condition of frame was obvious; stabilizer bar had pulled out of frame. How much more work would they have performed and charged me for if I had not brought subject up?? this is a safety issue! copeland sent me to Toyota.com for help; Toyota.com offered no assistance and pointed finger at copeland for their decision not to replace.

I received notification from Toyota 4 years ago that my Tundra had a potential frame issue regarding rust. I was instructed to bring it to a dealer for inspection which I did. I was told it would be inspected- if frame was intact but just rusted they would treat it with a coating, if it there were holes in the frame it would be replaced. My truck was at the dealer ( boch Toyota norwood MA) for several days. I was told frame intact, it was treated with rust proofing and coating. Last week the brakes failed- it took it to my mechanic and was told the brake line was rotted through causing leaking of brake fluid. There was no accident. When he replaced brake line he told me frame was rotted with large holes in several areas. I brought it back to dealer- told nothing they could do. I called Toyota and they told me the same.

Had truck towed due to broken brake line and was advised by mechanic that frame was severely corroded with holes above front wheels and was not safe to drive. Rear end also severely corroded. Contacted Toyota dealer, no warranty or recall on 2006 frames although Tundra and Tacoma older and newer than 2006 are getting warrantied frame replacements due to recalls. Dealer went to the garage that had towed the truck and inspected the frame. Dealer advised us to get holes in frame fixed at our expense. Dealer verified that there was an earlier recall to spray frames, but the spray had limited availability from Toyota and they were unable to fulfill the recall when we brought the truck to them for this service. The vehicle currently has 150,000 miles on it and should have been drivable for many more. We lodged a complaint with Toyota usa on 11/14/2018, complaint# 181 114 1536 and are next entering a complaint with the nh attorney general.

The contact was informed that there was a warranty extension for the subframe corrosion; however, the warranty period had expired. The approximate failure mileage was 170,000.

The vehicle was diagnosed by two independent mechanics who recommended that it not be driven. The vehicle was taken to brunswick Toyota (3041 center rd, brunswick, oh 44212, (888) 890-1882) in 2015 to be repaired per an unknown recall to prevent the corrosion. The manufacturer was contacted and provided a case number, but stated that the vehicle did not qualify for the lemon law and they could not assist. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 161,000.

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tundra. While driving approximately 10 mph and approaching a stop sign, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard when it was depressed. The contact coasted the vehicle to a field until it finally stopped. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. When the vehicle was placed on the lift, the mechanic noticed that the frame was severely rusted, including all the other components beneath. The vehicle was taken to kinderhook Toyota (1908 NY 9H, hudson, NY 12534) where it was diagnosed that the vehicle had severe rust failures. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 143,766. The VIN was unknown.

While changing a fuel tank strap that broke due to rust, I noticed the cross member at the front of the fuel tank is rotted right through where it meets the main frame. Truck has been undercoated. I talked to Toyota and they told me they are not fixing it at this time as there is no recall. How ever the 2005 and 2006 sequoia are part of this recall as well as the 2007 to 2009 Tundra.

The entirety of the vehicle frame is rusted. Cross-members supporting the bumper and spare tire are rotted and/or falling away from the main frame. I purchased the vehicle used with undercoating applied, but the frame rust was already too extensive underneath and caused significant corrosion.

Stabilizer links rotted off, fixed. Front end failing, falling apart at 78,000 miles. Also truck frame rusting badly, received recall 3rd notice a year after they expired it. I never received 1st 2 notices, they don't come not registered mail. We had mail issues with usps! the regular mailman was out for 2 years with cancer so we had substitute mailmen, we didn't always get our mail, get other peoples mail etc.. we would of called about the recall if we knew! I called Toyota corporate, they didn't care, said I had 3 notices, I only received 1 notice and it was a year after it expired! I am 2nd owner. The front end in the truck is falling apart, horrible vibrating/bumping and banging when driving down the road, truck now has 92K, I googled and it came back lower ball joint problem recall, 2006 Tundra. If it was serviced by previous owner and ball joint failed again wouldn't be recalled covered again" how do you find out if it was fixed the 1st time" I don't want to put more money into it if it is covered under a recall! I bought it with 58K, it was always garaged and only did vacation trips/highway miles, previous owner worked from home. I go 7 miles/day. And highway vacation trips. Previous owner was elderly and has passed away. Any service records I don't have, but he maintained it well! recalls should come registered mail! we also have a seat belt problem, they don't always work. They jam, don't recoil, get stuck.

The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 151,097.

The contact called dch wappingers falls Toyota (1349 U.S. 9, wappingers falls, NY 12590; 845-206-0521) and was informed that dod's limited service campaign stated that the frame would be at risk of corrosion and needed to be coated with a special covering tin order to prevent corrosion. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was advised to call the manufacturer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened case number: 1802063078. The contact would be responsible for the repair cost since the service campaign expired in 2015. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

Rusting of frame impacts structural integrity of vehicle. 2004-2006 model years were subject to a voluntary limited service campaign on the heels of a recall to the 2000-2003 model years. The limited service campaign is ineffective at mitigating the safety concern over the structural integrity of the vehicle. 2007-2008 are subject to recall as well. NHTSA should address this matter to ensure Toyota resolves the serious safety issues associated with a rusting frame.
