I bought a new 2014 Toyota Tundra Double Cab 4x4. After driving it for the initial 2-3 hours I noticed a bad exhaust drone that I realized was giving me migraines and nausea. Took it back to the dealer. They did a side by side comparison with another exact truck. It too had the problem and they deduced that they all came off the line like that and that since this was the case, "It was not a problem! I was the problem because I could not get used to the drone!" The dealer told me they could not help me and basically not to come back for this problem. It is my problem not theirs.
To date I have: 1) had the short OEM muffler cut out and a longer OEM one welded back in. This cut the drone noise 50%. 2) had 2 resonators placed in the tailpipe section. This cut the drone noise another 20-25%. Next I plan upon either taking a bath on trading it in for a Ford F-150 or buying some spray-on acoustical undercoating. What a lemon this new truck has been. It sat in my grass for 3 weeks before I had to do something to quiet the noise. I just did not want to go through the migraines from the drone. The stereo drowns it out if it is loud enough at this point, but who wants that. What is also sad is the cup holders won't hold a coffee cup, only tapered coffee mugs and the seat foam is too hard because my butt gets sore from the hard seat after about 45 minutes (and I am not fat!)!
Update from Jan 13, 2015: 1-13-15 Update. Now the dealer wants to have Toyota involved for a interior sound analysis. It now has 1540 miles on the truck and 95% of them are dealing with dealerships and muffler shops. Had an interior shop quote me an absurd amount of money to have sound deadener sprayed into the cab. I'm just spending more money on an already bad problem. Once a lemon, always a lemon in my book. Far be it for them to do things the easy way and simply refund my money!
Update from Jan 26, 2015: 1-26-15 Update: Took the Tundra back to original dealership, Cavender Toyota, in San Antonio. They looked it over again and did an update supposedly. They handed me my keys and said nothing to me. I was left holding the bag. They know about the drone by the way they are acting. It is all about units to Cavender. Heck with the customer! They did not answer a single email from me. Hear no evil, See no evil, Speak no evil, just heck with the customer. I don't know how they sleep at night. What a sorry bunch of people. I wish all the bad will back on them. It is not about doing what is right. It is hard to find an honest dealership. They did not even offer to trade me into something else! I refuse to spend more money to correct their problem. I have 1784 miles on the truck. All dealing with the drone. It is Ford or Mopar from now on out. This is my 3rd and last Toyota and what an shaft I got from Cavender Toyota on this deal. Don't buy a Tundra, there are better Trucks to get out there. So far, the Tundra is not holding it's value on a trade. Tundras don't hold their value any better than any other truck out there. It is a lie on Toyota's part. I put a lot of money down on the truck and so far the lowest quote on the truck in a trade in is 50 cents on the dollar. The highest is about 70 cents on the dollar. Just like Hitler, tell a lie enough, people will begin to believe it. The tundra is not holding it's value at this point. I don't want to spend any more money on the truck to soundproof the cab and modify the exhaust "again". to be continued
Update from Feb 1, 2015: 2-1-15 Update. I was thinking, It is going to be heck to pay when the class action lawyers get the bright idea that Toyota is putting out trucks that make people sick. The Toyota "Prophiteers" will be back peddling trying to fix this one. to be continued.
4-25-15 Update. Traded the Tundra at 1850 miles for a Ford F150. Could not drive the Tundra for the headaches. WOW! The F150 is such a better truck than the Tundra. The Tundra was a P.O.S.! The wife said the Ford is such a better truck and I bought a 4X4 super crew short bed. Quiet, has respectable power, good vision and smooth ride. I own 3 Toyota products and am switching to Ford. Buy the Ford, they did not take the money! This post is finished. Hope the class action lawsuit lawyers get this defect and run with it!!!!
