problem #1

Tundra SR5 4.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 40,000 miles

At first the transmission was stuck in 4th gear, but if I switched it to select I could cycle through all the gears. An engine light came on for a faulty solenoid. After a while of driving in 4th gear the light went away and it started shifting normally. 3 months later it started to shift very hard between 1st and 2nd gear, sometimes it was hard and sometimes it was soft. It got to a point that it was getting very annoying and always happening so I took it to car max to take a look at.

I really thought it was the solenoid that controlled the shifting from 1st to 2nd if its such a thing. They ended up taking it and changing out the valve body (which houses all the solenoids) and the torque converter. Problem went away. It was all covered under my extended warranty thankfully. If anyone else is having this problem of hard or weird shifts between gears I suggest just changing out the whole valve body your self. The part is around $900 though but you might be able to find it cheaper and there is a great video on YouTube I found on how to do it for a AB60 transmission (AB60E for 4x2 and AB60F for 4x4).
