About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
When I try to start my car, my steering starts shaking badly for 30 seconds. The whole car is shaking as well. After the shaking, the steering freezes and locked. The red steering working sign shows up. I cannot drive the car at all. The same issue has been widely reported by many VW customers online. You can find several videos on youtube. VW dealers told me they cannot fix it and refused to replace it as well.

From the Volkswagen recall site re: Steering wheel air bag & clock spring. Summary: Volkswagen group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Volkswagen Cc vehicles. In the affected vehicles, debris may contaminate the air bag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the air bag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag. Consequence: A loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag will prevent the air bag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury. The local VW dealer says our car is not included however, nothing works on the steering wheel and the air bag warning light in the dash is on. When contacting VW direct I am told NHTSA is responsible for expanding the recall to include our VIN. Questions" is our car safe to drive? if we have a front end collision will the steering wheel air bag work? if NHTSA is aware of 420,000 recalls for this same issue will the recall be expanded to cover other VIN" this is an expensive fix and all logic tells me it should have been included in the original recall.

The contact owns a 2013 Volkswagen Cc. The contact stated that while accelerating from a stop sign, the air bag warning light illuminated. In addition, the contact stated the steering wheel felt abnormal. The vehicle was serviced under NHTSA campaign number: 15V483000 (air bags) but the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the clock spring failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that they declined the claim due to the vehicle was already serviced under case number: 170565403. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

Vehicle will not start. Message indicates "steering wheel column lock". this happens intermittently. This is a known problem with other VW models, but dealership won't cover it, and general manager is acting as if he doesn't know this issue exists with other models.

Driving down highway and steering wheel took the car left, lost control and crashed. Entire wheel and axle was off vehicle. Lucky that the driver airbag opened as there was an open recall on it for possible defect.

The engine stalled while driving( speed 5-10mph). Steering wheel immediately automatically locked, lost control over the car.the computer showed a problem with the battery (the sign was displayed for a few seconds). Pushed the brakes - brakes worked. Removed the key and started the car again, the car started up and everything has stabilized.

Upon turning the vehicle, the engine starts up normally. However as soon as the engine is started up, in park mode, the steering wheel instantly begins to violently and out of control shake, vibrate, twists, and shake the whole vehicle. The act does not stop until the vehicle is turned off. This happens for an additional three to four times until the vehicle is turned off, and steering wheel is turned either way until you feel it lock into place or click into place. This happens at least once a week. There is video of the incident.
