This is a known recall but the dealer refused to do anything about it, even when the car was under warranty.

The very first time I brought in my GTI due to a low coolant level - I asked the service department (SD) to check it out. All they did was top off the fluids and said everything was fine. Not three (3) days later my low level indicator popped up again and I had to stop by the SD to pick up a gallon of coolant, I called to schedule an appointment but I had to wait a week and a half due to "a full schedule" so I was reduced to carrying water bottles of coolant with me just to keep the car going. Finally when I brought my car into the SD, they told me they had no loaners to give out....and could only provide a shuttle to my house.... They didn't show any concern as to how I was supposed to get to work - in the end I had to miss work for two days.

Pain in the ass overall, this issue came up last year and now again. VW issued a recall notice that I got in the mail about the coolant water pump saying they would reimburse any costs associated with work done on it provided you have proof or went to a dealership. Being proactive I checked my coolant reservoir just to make sure, lo and behold it was right above the warning level.... I brought it to the dealership and had a new one replaced (6hr) job.

GTI W Convenience And Sunroof 2.0L 4 cyl Turbo

  • Manual transmission
  • 45,000 miles

Randomly started to leak coolant from the engine and I had no idea where from. Got a warning in the dash and found the puddles underneath. Took it to a dealer and they replaced it for free (was under the 60k power train warranty). Could've been worse had I been over 60k. It's the 3rd water pump I've had to replace in 3 different Volkswagens. This is the first one covered under warranty.
