Burning smell coming from engine at 9000 miles. Dealer service repair tried to say it was residual oil from oil change (9 months ago??), took it to an independent mechanic who took one look and said the timing cover gasket seal is leaking. Went back to dealer service repair, who said it's a defective timing cover that cause the gasket seal to leak. Red flags here - has this damaged the timing components so that I'll have timing chain issues down the road? And remembering the defective timing chain tensioner issues with the 2012 and earlier VW's....beware.
Update from Jun 8, 2016: Three days after fixing the timing cover leak, the check engine light came on. So now the car also has a defective oil level sensor.

Fault timing chain caused one engine valve bent and one cylinder misfire, caused the car shaking suddenly then failed to start. The expense parts and labor is huge to rebuild the broken engine.
