VW Alltrack is less than a year old and purchased with an extended warranty. About five months ago I noticed a shimmy when braking at speeds over 65 mph but at lower speeds it really wasn't noticeable. It did get progressively more noticeable so my wife took the car to the dealer on 05/01/18 (West Broad VW in Richmond, VA). The service person said last week the brake rotors and pads need to be replaced to the tune of $820.00. If they did the work, they would not charge the 114.00 diagnostic fee. I told my wife to make sure to tell them it's less than a year old and we have an extended warranty. We were told the car was out of warranty since it had 22,000 miles on it and the extended warranty didn't handle wear items (i.e. Brakes). That's when I became really upset. We have the name of the GM of the dealership and have a call into him but haven't heard back yet.
What really makes me angry is that brake rotors shouldn't need to be replaced on a car less than a year old and if it is only being used for basic commuting and driving around town. This is BS!! We've taken excellent care of the car, had it serviced by the dealer when the maintenance schedule says. It is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a fast, racey automobile. My wife mostly drives it and she is in her early 60's and so am I. We both really like the car and hope that this is an isolated problem but I'm pissed at VW and the dealer. After this, think I need to find an independent garage that at least has a more reasonable cost to fix and maintain the car rather than the dealer.
Update from May 27, 2018: Dealership called us and asked if they could see and test drive the car. My wife took it in approximately 05/07. They ended up replacing the front rotors without a charge. The car no longer shimmies when the brakes are applied and we were not charged for the repairs. Thank you Westbroad VW for working with us and fixing the car. We really appreciate it.
