My engine check light would not go off so the mechanic said it was the exhaust and catalytic converter to be specific. They also told me it may be the sensors for the exhaust which are $600 a piece to replace... so after I replaced the converter there may be a possibility that I would have to replace the sensors since they may be the ACTUAL problem. Well, I checked the dealer who wanted a ridiculous amount of money to put a VW converter on and checked with a neighborhood mechanic who would weld it on while I waited (and got to watch from a safe distance) for $250 parts and labor! Well, I did it and it only temporarily fixed the light from coming on.
Seriously, a month later I got a recall from VW for the catalytic converter! Since I had it replaced myself from a non-VW mechanic then they wouldn't honor it. I had to have it replaced by the dealer for over $1,000 to get my car's engine light off to pass inspection. It wasn't like it was polluting the environment with the old one, it just had really sensitive sensors that required a fancy-dancy VW only part again, go figure.
