This has happened TWICE since I've owned the car. Both times at about 24K miles. The mechanic said this is common for this model, as the rear brakes absorb more of a braking load than most cars. You will not get a warning, as there doesn't seem to be any warning indicators built into the rear brakes if you get them through VW. Other forums list this as a VERY common problem, and VW will not list it as a defect.

Brakes on a small car like this under normal driving conditions should last 50-100k.

Sounded like bad brake pads in the back, ended up being something worse. No warning sensor installed on back, by the way.
Shouldn't happen on a car this young. I'm not an aggressive driver, and it's really low mileage for a four-year old vehicle. Disappointing and will definitely impact whether I buy a VW again in the future.
