I have never heard of a rear main seal going in any car, much less one with less than 100k on it, replacement at only 92k for $1350. Reading many forums and many people have had the same problem generally between 90 and 100k. Yes, this happens from time to time on almost all manufacturers but for this many people having the same issue with VW is unacceptable. The binding agent fails and so the seal separates from the housing causing a leak which can lead to system failure.

Luckily I am somewhat car savvy and notice drips. When I jack the car up there is oil all over the undercarriage. This is not a "maintenance issue". It is not a clutch nor u-joint nor pan gasket. A rear main seal should never fail, if it does, it surely should not be at under 100k. VWOA should at least offer to split the costs with the customer as labor is the bulk of the cost. Eight hours to replace a $200 part that shouldn't fail in large numbers to begin with. Look around the web, I am far from the only one having this problem.
