Jetta SE 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 141,000 miles

My 2.5L 2008 Jetta SE with 141,000 miles burns nearly a quart of oil each 1,000 miles. I just bought this car 13 months ago when it had 125,000 miles. The previous owner left 1/2 empty 5 quart oil in the trunk, and now I know why. In first two oil changes at 126,000 and 133,000 miles, the service center told me that I had hardly any oil left. By closely checking the oil level every couple of weeks, I can see that a quart of oil has literally evaporated.

I closely examine the engine area from the top, bottom, side, and there is absolutely no oil stain anywhere. Also, I tested the PCV valve by opening the oil cap and pulling out the dip stick, and I'm able to do it without any issues or vacuum sound. I average about 24~25 MPG in 70% highway and 30% city driving and car idles smoothly and has descent acceleration with any hesitation.

I've replaced the spark plugs, engine and cabin air filters, cleaned MAF sensor and throttle intake, but it's still burning oil. There is no smoke in exhaust either. VW says it's "normal" to burn a quart of oil every 1,000 miles, but if the oil change interval is 7,500, then there would be absolutely no oil left in engine. Right now, I'm having to put in about 5 quart of Mobile 1 European Formula synthetic oil between oil changes which I'm going to try to do around 5,000 instead of recommended 7,500 due to oil burning issue.
