Driving down Interstate 64 through Louisville KY running 70 mph, check engine light comes on. Sent a raw diesel smell through vents then rotten egg smell. Car will not start back up. From what I've gathered it's a high pressure fuel pump failure. This is more common then not on these cars. Volkswagen should have to make this a recall on the high pressure fuel pump issue. I will never buy a Volkswagen again if they won't stand behind their product. What good are they. Just found out there is several lawsuits on VW. They lied about emission control. Ain't that a shame.

I left work last Wednesday on 7/23/2014 and headed to the diesel station to fill my 2009 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI, filled up at a less than reputable station that charged way too much for diesel. Drove away and 1/2 mile down the road stalled out at a light. Turned off car at the light then turned back on and drove about an 1/8 of a mile down the road and stopped for good with no check engine lights illuminated on the dash.

Had AAA take me to a shop, actually the tow truck driver talked me into going to his home garage, to find out they don't work on diesels. Went to another garage who took the next 3 days to diagnose the problem, for which I paid $400 freaken dollars for. They actually had double that into the car by the time I received pictures via email of metal shavings all throughout the fuel system. The metal shavings were in all three (yes three) fuel pumps as well as the filter, tank and all lines. With this level of contamination every component would either need to be cleaned - if it had no moving parts - or replaced. My mechanic began calling around to dealerships to price out parts and at one time called me up with a $6000 rough estimate until he found out from one of the VW parts guys that this issue is occurring to all VW TDI motors in the United States due to our Diesel fuel having less lubrication properties than European diesel. Thanks EPA.

I have always used low-sulfur diesel fuel as instructed by VW in my car but have never been instructed by the manual or the dealership to use any additives with my fuel. I had my car towed over to the dealership and they knew about the issue and agreed to replace the entire fuel system at no charge. I'm still waiting for a loaner car though. My recommendation to new TDI owners is to use some type of lubricating fuel additive to reduce the chances of this happening to you. But I guess I have been dodging the bullet longer than most as I have heard, upon researching this problem, that some have had this happen after 50K miles. At the end of it all, I will still love my car. - Peace.

Jetta Sportwagen Tdi 2.0L

2009 Jetta Sportwagen, 80000 miles. I have had every scheduled maintenance done by local dealership since I bought it brand new. Driving home, glow plug light starts blinking, car goes into limp mode, no power, transmission drops to 4th gear. I pull over and don't try to restart, towed to dealership. Find out that the high pressure fuel pump imploded and fuel system needs to be replaced. WOW! I thought diesels are bought for reliability and dependability.

This will hurt the VW diesel movement in the US. VW of America needs to step up and recall these. I have owned diesels for a long time, never had problems like this. Don't buy VW diesel until they recall this problem. Will update progress after appointment with dealership management. Pray for me :). ?

I went to pick up some lunch during a break at school. As I was pulling out of the parking lot my car lost all power and the check engine light started flashing. I was pushing on the gas, but nothing was happening. I was on a very busy street and my car came to a stop in the right lane, and then the engine completely died. I tried to start it again, and it would not start. I called my local VW dealer to ask if I could bring it there, and I was told my car was no longer covered under warranty, even though I was pretty sure I had purchased the extended 100,000 mile warranty. Since the dealer told me I would have to pay out of pocket for any repairs I decided to take it to another shop instead. When I finally found a ride home, the next day, I found my warranty paperwork in my safe, but when I called they were closed. It was Friday night and they were not open again until Monday morning. In the time the shop started the repairs, and I was finally able to get a hold of the warranty company on Monday. After a lot of negotiating I finally got them to agree to pay the shop it was at for the repairs. The warranty company has paid for the new fuel pump, but now they are refusing to pay for the rest of the repairs. I have now been without my car for almost three months, as the warranty company is still giving me a hard time and trying to deny the rest of the repairs. I have called them hundreds of times, and I do not know what to do anymore.
