My abs, traction control and airbag light came on about a week before the incident happen. I already scheduled an appointment with my mechanic to repair everything and we had the diagnostics until hooked up. The front passenger wheel speed sensor showed randomly lower speed readings. Usually the abs and traction control lights turned on and just don’t work. But one day while driving on the highway, the error lights turned off and everything appears to be working normal again, until I had to brake and nothing happened but the abs rattle!! After hitting the brake again it finally detected the abs wasn’t working but still no brakes. I hit them again and suddenly locked up my tires because I had to brake so hard.
It was certainly a scary moment at 70mph and nothing I would expect from VW. My mechanic had to pull out the wheel hub and we saw the magnetic stripe was crumbling off which caused the faulty reading. To everyone that reads this, fix your brakes immediately if the abs lights turn on. A faulty abs system should not just reactivate while driving especially at higher speeds but it does which makes it dangerous. I lost my confidence in VW and I am German. My next car will be a Toyota or Honda.
