Oil cooler completely failed while in a parking lot causing a massive oil leak. Car was towed to VW dealer. VW dealer told me that the oil cooler needed to be replaced costing $700 installed. How does an oil cooler fail on a 3 year old vehicle (at the time)? This was something the technicians told me they don't see very often. I have been told by other shops that inexperienced technicians could have mistaken the oil cooler as the oil filter during oil changes on TDI vehicles and they will try to remove it and damage it causing it to later fail. This theory doesn't make sense to me as I have always taken the car to certified VW dealers for service. This still remains a mystery as to why it failed. VW dealer did not flush my coolant after replacing the cooler later causing damage to my heater core as it was clogged with oil. After spending hundreds of dollars on unsuccessful flushes my heater core needs to be replaces that would cost me over $1200 to replace. Thank god for the TDI recall/ buyback I'm not sinking any more money into this problem.
