We purchased our hybrid in June 2013 based on it's estimated mileage and solid feel. We considered a Prius and rented one for a weekend. After being disappointed with the quality and feel of it, we drove it to a VW dealer and purchased the Jetta Hybrid on the spot. We especially like the pep of the turbo 1.4L gas engine.
At issue is, at best, only 40-42 MPG was ever achieved. It drops to 33-36 MPG went using the A/C. Considering A/C is used in Arizona rather often, the MPG is a true disappointment. We've had the car for about 30 months and already have 88k on it. We've always used 87 octane fuel and never a drop of premium.
It is fun to drive and have never had brakes replaced which is a nice plus, considering it will probably be expensive once needed. Replacing the plugs at the recommended 40k cost over $500! Was told the plugs alone were $40+ each.
