My 2011 Volkswagen SportWagen has been a great car, until now. I was driving up I-26 after stopping to refill with diesel fuel at Kangaroo in SC. I traveled about 5 miles into NC and the car abruptly lost power and the glow plug light went on. I pulled over by a rest area and when I got the car stopped, the engine stalled. It would not restart.
This being Sunday, I called AAA and had it towed to a shop in Arden NC. The owner started to diagnose it and while replacing the fuel pump in the trunk, discovered metal filings. These apparently are caused by a catastrophic high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failure. The entire fuel system is contaminated and needs replacement.
There are many such failures documented on the internet, some of which VW covers and some that they don't. My fingers are crossed that they cover mine, as the bills can be $7,000 - $10,000. I paid $13k for the car several months ago and can't imagine a repair that is 3/4 of the price of the whole car. I have been stranded here in NC and can't get home to KY with my three dogs.

I was driving about 25 mph in a residential area when all of a sudden the glow plug light came on flashing! The car stalled then stopped. I turned the key off and started and it went about another 1/2 mile. It would not start again. I called a tow service and they towed me to their shop in New Port Richey to diagnose the problem.
Next morning I returned and he was putting it back on the tow truck and told me the problem was metal in the filter and fuel line and that the fuel injector pump was bad and had to be replaced along with all the injectors and that the dealer had to fix it.
Lokey Volkswagen of Clearwater, Fl. Is doing the repair under the extended warranty they gav3 me 2 months ago when I bought it used. They also gave me a loaner to drive whil3 it is in the shop.
I hope all works out well, as I was beginning to like my car.
