I bought my Jetta Sportwagen new in Jan 2013. 2.5 years and 45,000 miles later the trunk latch has stopped working allowing my car to be unsecured. It is a $350 dollar fix that I feel VW should be responsible for. I have never heard of a door lock going out in a car after 2.5 years. I have a 1971 Barracuda that still has the original locks and latches on it today that still work. Does this mean I should budget for every two years to replace my rear hatch lock from now on. If I have not bought a Jetta Sportwagen yet I would stay away from them. The maintenance is very expensive to the tune of $850 every 40,000 miles and now add on the charge of having to replace components that should last a lifetime but only last 2 years. I will be looking to sell this VW and get a vehicle that the company stands behind.
