This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Volkswagen dealer.
the first time this happened i called the dealer in Jackson, MS. the response was not to worry about it and just bring it in whenever i could. they did understand that i lived 2 hours away but didn't seem worried about it. they reset the light and it continually comes on at least once a month!

The check engine light was ALWAYS on!! When I first bought the car and it came on the dealer has the fuel pump and the fuel pressure sensor fixed, or so he said. Then the check engine light came on again. When I took it to the mechanic they told me that it was throwing codes that meant the car was overheating..... the car has never overheated. I ended up having to have the Thermostat replaced in the car and so far that has helped. But then when the finished that, the car starting throwing codes for the fuel pressure....AGAIN!! This car has done nothing but cost me money.... not to mention the $165.00 battery......

Volkswagen passats are lemons. This 2006 car has been nothing but problems. It has been one cost after another. None of the problems are routine ones. Sept car had trouble starting. Found out it was the steering column and this problem has existed with passats for at least 10 years. Cost $1700 Now it is a hesitation or jerking problem. Need to replace valves and clean out engine. Cost $1000. 3weeks ago leak in engine cost $350. And many other repairs too numerous to mention.
Never even consider buying a volkswagen unless you have money to waste. Oil changes alone at leas $75 cause it needs synthetic oil. It has had at least 5 recalls and all the repairs listed above are not one of the recalls.

I've had numerous problems with my Passat, from expensive headlight repairs, new condenser, steering column replace, etc. This latest repair is going to be at leat $2000. My car started making loud noises upon starting, but the noises went away quickly. A few months later, the engine light came on and I've been told by my mechanic that the oil pump sprocket bolt broke off. He read about other Passat owners from 2006 having the same exact problem.

Check Engine Light has come on intermittently for the last 2 years. It's a '06 Passat FWD 4cyl that ran great for the first year. The last 2yrs., the CEL comes on for approx. 30min. drive time then goes off. Does this about 10 times every 10,000 miles (some tanks of gas it will do it twice). Dealer says this can happen and if car seems to run fine, and as long as it goes off within a "reasonable" amount of time, it's ok to drive. Didn't like the answer I pressed them to better explain why this happens and what they need to replace to stop it from happening. They couldn't give a better answer. Otherwise, a good car.

Sometimes, the Check engine light always stays on. This does not happen every time. Checked with Archer VW, Houston few months ago and they said everything is fine and no problem has been logged in its electronic logs

Well I bought this car in July 2006, drove it home and 3 days later check engine lite came on so I took it back to the dealership to check it, 20 minute later, dome light is out so I went back home. Next day go to work and the light came on again, so day after back to the dealership. This went on for a while until I gave up cause I thought they didn't know or could not figured out was the problem was. I think I took the car back to the dealership right before the warranty expired, told them about the check engine light to see if this time they find what it could be, well to my surprise come to pick up the and the check engine light was out, YES finally they did it. I asked what was the problem the guy said " vacuum leak" , well finally the car is running perfect, By this time I already paid off the car there is no more warranty. Almost a year had passed and check engine light came back on this time I took the car a mechanic shop that a friend recommended, the mechanic said that he was going to check sensors malfunctioning and I mentioned the Vacuum leak previously fixed, he told me he was going to use smoke machine to find the leak, if there was one. Well he found the leak alright, I saw the vacuum hose that was having the leak and saw that someone try to repair it before but they use BLACK ELECTRIC TAPE to cover the leak that why it lasted about a year before started to leak again. After that was fixed this time with the right part, Replacement of the damaged vacuum hose {2} cost me about $300.00 but the car was working better than new. Today 9/26/16 the car is in the garage because on 9/19/16 coming home from picking my daughter at school doing 65-70 mph down the highway the engine died. Took it to the shop and was told that the timing belt jump and the engine may be finish. The car has 122000 miles on it, all the service has been done on time and sometimes I change oil and filter and that stuff cause I just wanted to do it. Now I have read about problems with the 2006 engine and VW doesn't want to take responsibility, apparently they use defective parts but who knows. I might need a new engine. And the interiors is another story.
