This car was brought to dealership where my son was attending college (Buffalo, NY), because he had a coolant and oil leak. The oil issue was not handled and the car stopped running while he was driving. He had it towed to dealership again and was told he needed an engine. Car was towed to his house until something could be done. I had it towed to my mechanic in Greene County, NY who diagnosed the problem-the timing chain tensioner failed causing the pistons to bend, etc. It will cost about $4-5K to install a used engine. He owes $5k on the car, so what to do? Both my mechanic and I have searched the web and have found MANY individuals with the same issue-there was also a possible class action lawsuit in the past.I will be notifying Volkswagen Corporate about this but should gather more information from others. Hoping others who have been screwed over by VW, will write in and possibly we could get legal assistance!

I had the timing chain and the cam replaced in November of 2016 and spend approximately $4,000. I took my car back to Lafontaine Volkswagen dealership repeatedly after they claimed they fixed in in 2016. The engine light never went off and neither did the service now light go off. They took it in every time I brought it to them and reset something and the lights would go off for a day or two. There was never any solution offered to the problem.
On September 14, 2018 the engine shut down. I took it to three different mechanics before having it towed to Lafontaine Volkswagon. The said I need a new engine and I asked why and after some hesitation they said the timing chain bad. I reminded them that they had fixed it in November of 2016, they said this was a different problem and that the work done in November 2016 is not under warranty.
I been taking my car to Lafontaine Volkswagen for routine service over the years, not sure how the timing chain died for a second time? They're telling me now that it can't be fixed and that I need a new engine that would cost upwards of $5,000.
