I reported this to VW . They said it happens and it is most likely dirt that caused it.
They gave me a price of 1600.00 to replace both sides.
Why replace both sides if only one side is broken
Is this another money grab.

Diesel under VW payment program for emissions and fuel economy claims - can either keep car and accept cash, or trade car at inflated value. How many people do you know that have experienced a broken front spring on a car - chances are they all owned recent VW or Audi models. VERY DANGEROUS. Happened at highway speed on smooth road - blew tire - failed the wheel bearing. Dealer showed me three broken springs, all from VWs. This failure cost me $788, but the other strut, two tires and the wheel bearing still need attention.
I believe the break is due to bad metallurgy. The spring has no missing paint - no corrosion - classic spiral fracture from metal fatigue.
To make matters worse, one puny 17 mm lug-nut was so tight, it caused the lug wrench to fail - also metal weakness due to bad metallurgy.
I had similar issues with metal sourced in China - VW is a the #1 auto in China - could be the cause of their prb.
I would like to see a saftey-related recall. What do I do next?
