transmission locked up

I started having issues where I'd start my TDI passat SEL and the the transmission would lock up. The shifter would be stuck in park and with the PRNDS indicator lights flashing. I'd get a dash light for gearbox malfunction (yellow sun looking icon with exclamation,) as well as something like "Service now!" OBDII would read P0701. I had bad a feeling that the mechatronics unit was failing. I could not get it to run at all. I had a miserable time because it got stuck in public. I had to pay 1000 just to get it out of impound. Then I brought it to the VW dealership to get it repaired. They told me "oh don't worry about the transmission! It's probably the battery or something" they said it needed a new alternator and battery as mine were causing the transmission to get confused. I was very skeptical but the previous owner insisted this dealership was great and they had good reviews. I spent 3500 on their diagnosis and repair. It only temporarily fixed the problem. A few days later the car died again and once again was impounded before I could get my bf to tow it. I cried so much. I told the shop I felt mislead because they apparently knew the mechatronics unit was in fact also failing, but neglected to mention it. They just put a tiny note about it in the 7 page paperwork. I had spent all my money on the "repairs" which weren't even the necessary ones and so couldn't get it out of impound. Ultimately the impound had my car demolished. Very sad experience. I did love the car even though it ruined me emotionally and financially. Thanks VW

Passat TDI SE Diesel

  • Automatic transmission
  • 37,521 miles

I was driving in a small town and the transmission locked up in third gear. I called the dealer for assistance and the service adviser recommended I take it to the nearest VW dealer.

It took the dealer over 2 hours to determine the "Mechatronics" software needed to be reloaded.

No lockups since.
