Passat SEL 3.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 105,777 miles

Stuff just quit working, first the phone to car radio pairing quit (separate or related?) Air bag light in instrument panel started coming on. Then all of the steering wheel controls quit working. The back-up camera doesn't work and not sure if this is also a separate problem or caused by the same clock wire. Was told at garage that this is a known problem with the Passat as well as other VW's.

I can make most repairs myself, but some require specialty tools, so have to decide to buy tool or pay shop for repair. gonna check in with recall list to see if this is covered. Engine oil light blinks "Add Oil' sometimes when not needing oil, could be from same problem. I reckon that is all for now. Thanks for listening (reading).

Passat SEL Premium 1.8t

  • Automatic transmission
  • 63,000 miles

A replacement clockspring has been on backorder for over a year, so there is nothing I can do to fix this problem. I cannot use any button on the steering wheel or my horn and the airbag will not work.

No one has the part to repair. Been on backorder with Volkswagen for MONTHS. It's a SAFETY issue and will not pass inspection in this condition. VW and dealer cannot give us an ETA.

I purchased a reliable car for my daughter to travel to college with. We live in the state of New York and she was going to Alabama to attend school. 1 year into college, her steering wheel options stopped working. Her horn didn't work, the airbag error message was on and her dashboard light flickered. She brought the car to the closest VW dealer which was in Birmingham AL. Her college is in Tuscaloosa AL. Between the drive and the cost of travel, this was a terrible situation to put a 19 year old in. It would not pass inspection. After searching this issue online, I saw that this has affected so many VW cars. Why is there not a recall on this? This is a safety issue!!!

2018 to 2021. Fast forward 3 years and again my daughter's car lost the steering wheel functions. The horn doesn't work, the airbag doesn't work and she cannot use any of the functions on her steering wheel. We had the clock spring replaced in 2018 while she was away at college and now it appears the clock spring is bad again. Her car is due for inspection and it will not pass if the horn and airbags don't work. Why is this not a recall? This is a safety issue!
