The problem is due to a small plastic tube that extrudes from the connector that attaches to the heater core. The tube is for a small rubber hose to attach to it which carries coolant. The small size and thinness of the walls of the tube caused it to crack and leak coolant. It is located right up near the firewall in the engine compartment and under extreme heat and vibration. To replace the part by me is nearly impossible and had to take to a dealership. It is hard to reach. I was able to get it off the heater core, but the hose connection at the other end is difficult to reach or even see, The replacement part 5K0122157K is an assembly. I think VW will see a lot of these needing to be replaced in the future. The thin plastic tube snapped right where it connects to the main connector at the heater core. Poorly designed if you ask me and failed right after the warranty expired.
