problem #2

May 072018

Passat 1.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 69,595 miles

Jan. 2017 I purchased a 2015 VW Passat with 29,100 miles on the odometer. I had the regularly scheduled maintenance done on it. On May 7, 2018 while driving on interstate 20 in Atlanta, my engine, battery and EPC lights all came on. The car started to surge and lost total power before I could get to the shoulder. I had to quickly place the car in neutral and jump out and push it completely onto the shoulder.

The vehicle was towed to VW Stone Mountain. They did a diagnostic check and stated that the number 2 spark plug had been impacted by the piston and caused a catastrophic engine failure. The cost of a new engine is $13,670. I informed VW of Union City, Ga, where I purchased the vehicle of their findings. They said that they would have to performed a separate diagnostic check to confirm. Second check performed same conclusion.

The owner informed me that my problem was with VW of America. He said "we only sell them and service them, we don't build them." I contacted VW of America and spoke with an executive specialist. I tried to explain to him what happened. He stated that he was not concerned with what happened just get him the copies of all oil change invoices. The copies were provided to him. He stated that since the power train warranty was over the miles limit about 9500 miles that VW would only offer me 25% off the cost of the parts.

I informed him that for $2,600 I could purchased a used engine with a limited warranty installed. I asked if VW would consider issuing me a check instead of the discount. He said no, the deal was only good if I purchased an engine from VW. $226 in diagnostic fees, $125 in tow fees $13,670 for a new engine.

Lastly, I asked both service advisors at both dealers how this loss could have happened. They said that they did not know and to be sure they would have to brake the engine down completely. They stated that would be to costly and it would be best to purchase a new one. They could not guarantee the next engine wouldn't meet the same faith. Their advise to me was "lets hope it doesn't happen again". COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE AT 69,595 MILES.

Passat LX 1.8L

the epc light comes on and causes loss of power

I bought my brand new VW Passat in November of 2015. It has about 2,200 miles. In December of 2015 while driving the EPC light came on as I was pulling onto a highway. As I stepped on the gas the car had a loss of power and the car shuddered ,i could not go faster than 25 Mph. The car stalled. Had car brought to Kelly VW in Scranton Pa. after 2 hours of diagnostics I was told that there is a connection issue that they cannot find, they even called Germany on the problem. They were advised to replace the whole wiring harness. 2 weeks later a Recall un related to the EPC problem ,NHTSA # 15V705 arrives by mail. So I now have 1 definite recall and possibly 3 more,NHTSA # 15V373000( Brake line/piping/fitting. NHTSA # ??? Gasoline fuel injection -fuel rail and NHTSA # 14V670000 Seat malfunction. The consequences to all is serious accident and or explosion. At this date I will not drive this car,nor do i want to keep it. I have had 5 VW in the past, this will be my last. Can i turn this car in ?
