About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
While driving at a speed of 50 mph on a rural road, the front driver-side tire instantly deflated. Fortunately, the vehicle was safely pulled over away from traffic. Upon examination it was found that the valve stem had broken off, and the tire had deflated as a result. The rest of the tire was in good condition. In this type of vehicle, the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is part of the valve stem, and that is what had broken off. A second similar incident happened approximately 6 months later with the rear driver-side tire of the vehicle, while traveling at 55 mph.

Front driver side tire rapidly deflated causing the vehicle to pull right into on coming traffic. The near miss could have been fatal. Upon investigation it was determined that the cause was corrosion of the TPMS valve. I did a quick internet investigation and learned that the corrosion and resulting tire failure are common incidents. Why haven't these faulty TPMS valves been recalled? this issue will surely result in deaths which I believe is the opposite of what these TPMS sensors are for.

The contact owns a 2010 Volkswagen Routan. The contact stated that while driving 15 mph, the tire pressure warning light illuminated as the front passenger's side tire deflated. The contact had a roadside assistance service change the tire and install the spare. The tire was taken to the dealer, who stated that the valve stem on the tire was corroded. The wheel was repaired but the failure recurred on the rear driver's side wheel. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 20,000.

2010 Routan with 26K miles pulls to the right and most likely has done so since I bought it since the tires need replacing. The brakes have been replaced at 18K and now need to be done again. VW denies there is an issue with vehicles pulling to the right. Opened case 130240300 with VW. They refuse to cover the cost to diagnose the cause of the pulling and tire wear. Recall needs to be issued I have seen numerous postings with the same issue online.
