According to VW, the vehicle should average 22 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. I am averaging 20.2 mpg, mostly highway driving, about 30%city and 70% highway. Doing some research into this, it appears that this direct fuel injection design on this engine contributes to carbon build-up, which sooner or later will start to cause decreased gas mileage, possible misfiring and/or stalling. Wasn't a repair or maintenance necessity I was expecting to encounter but if I decide to keep the vehicle i have no choice. I'm sure thius would be costly, since it involves accessing the intake manifold and sandblasting the valve areas, one cylinder at a time, and hopefully preventing debris from entering the combustion chamber. 4 mpg may not seem like much, but over time, it adds up. Seems like another cover-up by VW and it's a TSI not a TDI.
