S60 5-cyl

  • 62,000 miles
I was driving my 2004 Volvo S60. There were no adverse driving conditions, and I was driving normally. I went to put my S60 in park, and it would not go past neutral into either reverse or park. My S60 has a geartronic transmission (geartronic is essentially the brand name of the Volvo manumatic transmission. Source: www.ehow.com/info_7784643_geartronic-transmission.html#ixzz1K1hj4jpr) this is a safety issue because of the fact that if I needed to go into reverse I couldn't, and because I could not shift into park and therefore could not remove my key from the ignition. There were no noticeable events leading up to this failure of the geartronic transmission shift knob, but it is a valid safety issue, and may result in a recall if this failure occurs in more Volvo with the geartronic transmission. Any information you can gather from Volvo dealers and other reputable Volvo service businesses can potentially gather enough issues with the geartronic transmission shift knob to issue a recall. This issue, if it has occurred or does occur in other Volvo with the geartronic transmission and gear shift knob, may cause the driver to not be able to shift into or out of certain gears, and may result in the cars not being able to be put into park. This could result in said vehicles rolling after turned off. Also, the key will not come out of said vehicles if they are not able to be shifted into park.

When accelerating from a stop, the transmission seems to skip a gear. This results in uneven acceleration, making merging into traffic hazardous. It only happens sporadically.

  • Automatic transmission
  • 9,000 miles
Volvo S60 2004, 9000 miles, automatic transmission. While leaving a traffic light (accelerating) and at a speed of about 20 mph the engine suddenly stopped. No power for steering and brakes. What could happen if the defect occurred on the highway? the car was serviced at Volvo garage according to maintenance program (6000 miles). Now they said that the defect was due to the air admission system, which was found to be dirty.

Vehicle with automatic transmission has a serious design flaw that results in a serious delay when decelerating rapidly. The delay makes it seem as though the throttle has "stuck" for 2-3 tenths of a second. The "R" is touted as a performance vehicle and this delay in throttle response is down right dangerous when the vehicle is driven hard. This delay occurs every time one decelerates quickly from full throttle. Volvo says it is "normal"..
