I bought this car for my son back in December 2017, therefore I am not the main driver. Recently I found out this 'Engine burning oil' problem has been going on for a while, like a few years!!

As stated in a few other complaints, the engine oil needs to be topped off only a few hundred miles after service maintenance. We are lucky that it has not got to the point where the engine is completely destroyed!

Is there anything these car owners can do? Is there a lawsuit? This is a 'known' issue stated in some technical write up, something about the piston ring being the issue. So Volvo dealers are getting away with this known issue?

I was driving to work and made a turn and I noticed a red light turned on. It was on briefly and then went out. I didn't have time to read the entire warning, just that it was something about the oil. The light never came on again and I drove the car for the next week. On the weekend, I remember the light and opened the hood to check the oil level and discovered there was no oil on my stick!!! I was totally shocked. I purchased the car last September (about a year ago) from Carvanna and haven't had any issues with the car. Now I read this is a serious issues with the 2012-2013 T5 engines.

I don't have to the money to replace the car at this time but now I don't have any confidence in reliability of the car. I have a 45-minute drive each way to work each day in heavy traffic and now I'm afraid it will break down without warning at anytime.

I remember cars in the 70's and 80's having problems like this. I would always be adding oil to the car. I thought those days were over but I guess not. I will keep monitoring the oil level and update this site frequently.

Does anyone has any idea where the oil is going? I wonder if the turbo is burning the oil? I buy my oil change kit through FCP European website. I will post the question to techs there and post any response I have from them.

As I was an Auto-Technician at the same dealership as I have purchased my 2013 Volvo 260 T5 from a Land Rover Dealership of Cherry Hill, NJ in November of 2019. I've noticed numerous times that my Low Oil Pressure light comes on every few hundred miles. I've checked my vehicle out in and around the engine and have not noticed any leaking, smelling, or burning of the engine. I and other colleagues could not grasp where my oil is going. The dipstick is always dry with no oil. Sometimes I would just do an oil refill until it read good on the dipstick. I would also change my oil filter at times. I brought this car cause I was having car trouble with my last car, not knowing that I would have these issues, I would have thought about purchasing this vehicle.

So, as of today April 8, 2020 during these hard Covid-19 times and as the only resource of transportation for me to get around to run errands for family needs, my S60 stalled then died with no warning after coming to a complete stop at a stop sign. I've read over and over of similar post as mines about this issue and how Volvo Corporation has not issued any recalls for this error. Except for th fact that everyone seems to have to get a new engine replacement. I do not have the type of money for this repair. This is a very sad as I am stuck not knowing what to do in these times even as a Auto-Technician. Somebody please help me. Volvo Corporation please help me.

I Purchased a 2013 Volvo S 60 in 2015 it had about 50,000 miles on it. I always got my oil changed every 5000 miles. I didn’t have any problems with it until it was about hitting the 70,000 mile range. The check engine light came on and it said to pull the car to the side of the road and get assistance immediately.

I checked it oil there was none left I had gone 4000 miles since my last oil change I didn’t know what happened I’ve never heard this of this problem before. I had my oil changed again and started checking it every month after. The car started to use quart of oil every 500 miles. I took it to a mechanic that works with Volvo’s they drained the oil tank replaced the PCV valve told me to come back in 3000 miles to check the oil again. I was checking the oil throughout this time and noticed it was still burning oil it had gone completely empty at 2000 miles.

This is a known problem for the 2012 S60’s and I believe my engine must’ve come from that bunch is well. I talked to the mechanic again and he said best thing to do is always keep a quarter oil in the car.

Update from Nov 22, 2019: My 2013 Volvo S60 has oil consumption. Where the oil is not leaking down to ground or burning but is leaking within the engine. . After much research i have seen this is an issue for 2012 and 2013 S60 engines. I have taken it to a Volvo dealership to have this evaluated. They performed a leak test which mine registered at 22% which is within the range where Volvo deems the engine is defective. After this the Volvo Tech said that they would perform a valve/ring job and that Volvo would pay for half of this-meaning my part would be $2500. I have read that for the most part this does not correct the issue and that an engine replacement is what is required. The tech told me that if this was needed for my car Volvo would pay for half of this. The cost for me would exceed the current value of my car. This is a lemon issue as it has happened to several S60's. For some Volvo has provided a Goodwill repair where there is no cost to the owner. I am currently petitioning Volvo Corporate for a Goodwill repair.

2013 S60 T5 AWD experiencing excessive oil consumption - burning or consuming at least 5 quarts of oil every 2K-3K miles, between oil changes. I have had no "LOW" warnings before I get to the NO LOW OIL PRESSURE INDICATOR!! And the NO OIL PRESSURE light doesn't even stay on - it flashes a couple of times stating NO OIL PRESSURE - STOP SAFELY. Then, the warning goes away! Because I still call the dealership and take the message seriously, I know that the oil is being consumed excessively (no dripping / leaking onto ground).

This has now happened on THREE occasions - - 80K service completed on 9/10/2018 with 80,494 miles - on 10/22/2018, the first instance of this issue took place 2 hours away from home at 82,614 miles and a loud squeak - I added 2 quarts at gas station, drove to dealership per advice of I paid to have the oil trap replaced :( - on 1/8/2019, the second instance of this issue took place at 86,060 miles. Do not recall how many quarts of oil were added. - on 4/1/2019, the third instance of this issue took place at 89,140 miles. Volvo had to add FIVE quarts of oil yesterday!

I have owned this car since October 2013 and have exclusively had it serviced by Volvo. I am aware that this was a known issue on the 2011-2012 S60 that had a recall - wondering if this issue is also on the 2013. It appears that several instances that led to the 2011-2012 recall had resulted in engine failure and/or $5K or more in personal cost to fix piston/value issue or replace engine.

I was topped off yesterday and left the Volvo service center with the same car. I am concerned as there is no low oil pressure light to warn me before this sudden intermittent flicker of a "no oil pressure".....is it safe to drive anymore? Is this destroying the engine? I feel like THREE occurrences is way too many....
