The Volvo dealer has been working on this problem since 16 August with help from Volvo Corp. I was now (4 December) told that they needed to install over $2000 in parts that may or may not work to solve the problem.
Without the display unit, the radio does not work, can't see the interior temperatures, heat seat settings, or change the car operating options.
The display in the dash cluster now only displays Swedish warnings, which I cannot switch back to English since this requires the information system.

Infotainment screen just went blank in my wife’s 2015 Volvo S60 with ~ 91k miles on it. Without the screen there is no radio, no backup camera and no access to several important functions. Thought it was a fuse so I replaced that but it did not solve the problem. Currently investigating other solutions before taking it to the Volvo dealer. Those folks are super nice but also really good at finding ways to extract thousands of dollars from me every time we visit.
