Transmission started having problems on uphills, slipping and over revving in 3rd gear, classic problem for this transmission as viewed in various forums. Then problem got worse and reduced engine performance message came on. Volvo's solution - replace gearbox! Went to a transmission specialist hoping to get it repaired, but they also said replace, but quite a bit cheaper than Volvo. Transmission totally failed. Turns out that the transmission for that year was extremely rare and expensive. Ended up scrapping the entire car. Very expensive luxury class car, however, many things failed. Auto dim rear view mirror failed, window regulator failed, regular check engine light failures, resulting in loss of cruise control. Car was a disaster. Will NEVER buy another Volvo product. Very over-hyped.

I bought this vehicle with 134K in July 2012. Within days of purchasing the vehicle, the transmission began to have a serious delay between 1st and 2nd gear. I made the dealership cover the entire issue and they showed me a receipt that they had the thing rebuilt for $2700 with a one year warranty. It's a good car and I'm kinda surprised that the transmissions are as weak as they are. I gave my stepdaughter my previous Volvo, a 1995 850, and it has 260K on it's original transmission.
